Steve, I believe that only 34 V code Road Runner convertible cars were built in 1970. Very rare cars indeed. I worked on the right front framerail, shock tower and inner fender today. Nothing too exciting, just drilling out spot welds and separating braces and gussets! I am going to brace the car up, then swap out the tortion bar cross member first, then I will start removing the framerail, shock tower and inner fender. The car is bolted to a body jig dolly,so I don't anticipate a lot of movement, but I am going to notch out of foot long piece of 4x4 wood, so the rocker pinch weld will fit into the notch in the wood, and use a floor jack to lift the frame rail slightly off the dolly,to be able to remove it and slip the new framerail into place. After that I will tack it in place and fit the doors fenders and hood to get the gaps right, before welding it in permanently. Once that is done then the new AMD full floor pan is next. Lots of work to do ahead of me,but that will get rid of the worst parts of the car.

My goal for this car is to knock out the ugly areas, and get the unibody structure solid and straight, then mothball the project until a later date.

i know how you feel i had to do both front frame rails and torsion cross member on my road runner

I know,I got my work cut out for me! Being a convertible makes changing frame rails a bit more tricky! It has to be spot on,and there's a lot bigger chance it may move without a roof to keep it square and true!

After what seems like a week of block sanding I got the right rear quarter panel into primer! I got the left one roughed out with 36 grit, but there's about another week of block sanding to go to get that side into primer!

Boy that will look nice when I put it on my trailer:lol:

It's coming along,Steve! I worked on the drivers side rear quarter panel tonight. I put my car skates under the casters on the rear of the body dolly, which allowed me to move the car side to side to give myself more room to work on the quarter panels. After another 5 hours of blocking,I got the panel in etch primer. I hope to get primer on it tomorrow,if I do pictures will follow!

Last night I scuffed the drivers side rear quarter panel down and got a couple of coats of primer on it. It looks pretty good considering the previous owner had skimmed both rear quarters with a generous coat of body filling and never graded or sanded any of it. Most of the filler ended up on the garage floor. They look pretty straight after several days of blocking them. I am pleased with the way they came out.

Well it's official! I made the last payment on the Road Runner convertible today! I received the title and a nice clean original fender tag for the car. I also put a deposit on the Air Grabber hood he has for the car. It is a new AMD hood, with the air grabber door, and an original unbroken air box, vacuum actuator, actuator mounting bracket, cold air flap with all linkage, vacuum canister, back of the hood insert with turn signals, vacuum hoses and switch, and 70 lower air grabber dash panel with the correct holes for the switch and 4 speed reverse switch. I thank my friend for letting me make payments on the car,it wouldn't have been possible to buy it otherwise, and for holding the hood and hood related parts for me. I did pay the car off more than two months earlier than we agreed to,and will have to hood payed off before that time as well! It feels great to own the car I have been working on for months! I have a firewall from a 70 GTX that has all the holes for the air grabber pieces, and will use it to template the correct mounting holes before drilling the car! Great Day! ...except now I have to get back to work on the car!

I got out there in the garage and cut the tortion bar cross member out. The passenger's side had a repair section on it that wasn't the same as the factory end, that was never welded to the rocker panel. The left side was rotted and repaired with screen and body filler. I need to fabricate a 3x3 inch piece of metal for the inner rocker panel on the passenger's side.

I guess back in the day, if the cross member didn't look rotted, then it wasn't! Old school framerail repair kit! Screen and body filler!

A couple more pics of the tortion bar cross member I removed from the car last night. It was too dark for a good picture last night. The right side had a repair section on it, I will cut that off and save it to use on another car.

I have fixed worse. The car has some spots, but once I get the tortion bar cross member right front framerail and the floor pan in,the real ugly spots will be repaired.

Now you can't jump back and forth between Plymouth and dodge can you?.....all those chargers will get jealous

lol,I was down to one Plymouth, until this convertible came along! My 71 Cuda 340 was getting lonely!
