Hey guys,

My 70 Satellite has a 440 block waiting to be dropped in and currently has a 8 1/4 inch rear that just wont hold up. I have a Ford 9 waiting to be used and dont know a thing about swapping it in. Does the housing need to be cut to fit? Also, will be held together with a street lynx rear from Reilly motorsports. Thanks everyone.

The 8 1/4" sure won't hold up to a mild 440. A 9" Ford is generally strong. Making it really stout takes some parts. Good luck.

Sacrilege! But if you must, you’ll need to measure both and cut the 9 to fit. You’ll also need a conversion u-joint and weld the perches to 44 inches on center.

That is a huge help! Thank you!

A Mopar 8 3/4" isn't that hard to find.

BTW as I understand it there are several versions of 9" Fords. Some much stouter than others. Just saying.

Can't remember... do the 9" Fords offset the pinion? That's a big thing to look at, the pinion location (left to right) needs to be the same as yours for proper phasing.

Yeah that's another great question. I was wanting to take the time and do this all myself but I may have to bite the bullet and let a shop handle it. Thanks for post

I got the Ford 9" based rear axle assembly from Quick Performance for my wife's GTO 421 Tripower 4 bolt main rebuilt and souped-up bruiser.
I also added at least $1,000 in upgrades, and I won't ever worry about it breaking, and that is behind a 4XX HP and torque motor with a standard transmission.
The pinion is offset by QP to align with the factory location! Very important!
I also saved at least $1k over Currie, Moser, etc etc and I would compare the one I have to ANY of those manufacturers for quality, strength, and performance.
