I have a real strange car. I bought a 73 charger. I sent the WY title in and the state of South Dakota rejected it and threw it away. They said the numbers were wrong and that is all they said. I did a Vin number search on it and it comes up as a 73 Coronet? This was the same number that was on the title and the title listed it as a 73 charger SE. I know the title was from years back but what the heck?? I also know the Vin looks to be unchanged. The rivets look to be original. So now it appears I own a U code 73 charger with out a title. The fender tag is gone and I am not sure if the Vin is any other place on this year of car. Just wondering if anyone has ever herd of a car with the wrong Vin. Also is there any other place where the Vin might be stamped?
Thanks

Wait a minute . They're probably getting buggered up on the W. Which used to be coronet only.

The W does correspond to both Coronet and Charger but the 29 shows a 2 door sports hardtop, a model the Coronet didn't have since they were all 4 doors post sedans and 4 door wagons by then.

I entered the vin in a search and it says 73 coronet. Either way the state wont title it. And the person I got it from sold it because he was moving and now I don't even have a name. So not sure what I can do. I don't want to part it as it was a U code 440 SE. It had all the bells and whistles. And I would hate to put money in it and restore it with no way of titling it.

You need to try a little harder.
Where are the other Chargers in your state.
Driving around.

I think the 29 is SE, 23 is Rallye..

What exactly do you mean by 'they threw it away'?

Did your State Titling Agency literally throw out your paperwork and tags into the trash? Or did they just reject your application?

Throwing out your personal property seems a bit irresponsible of them.

In Nevada we have Bonded Titles for old cars with title
problems. The Bonding Co. usually charges us $150.00 for
a $5000 Bond. You might try another state in your area for
their regulations.

The last 8 digits of the VIN will be stamped on the radiator support and on the cowl under the weather strip above the master cylinder area.

They said they no longer had it as it was not legit. But I agree with you.

Thank you. I couldn't find a number on the Radiator support but will look again.

I don't know much about 'titles' but it sounds like you got royally screwed because they are imbeciles.
Need to go make a stink with a higher up.

This should be pretty easy to resolve.

Explain to them that starting in 1971, Dodge consolidated the mid side B body into two different name plates, kept the W VIN category and dropped the X VIN category previously reserved for Chargers. Two doors received the W VINs and the Charger nameplate. Four doors received the W VIN and Coronet name plate. Therefore, any W*2* VIN carries a Charger name and any W*4* carries a Coronet name. There is plenty of documentation in factory parts books and service manuals as evidence.
