75 watt incandescent ban goes into effect

I suspect the Canadians are behind this. It's all designed to increase the need for heating oil and they're our biggest supplier.

jesus. i hope that was a bad attempt at sarcasm

One can look at the incandescent light bulb ban as a mandate to have all bulbs made in China. CFL's have their place but not in my place. The halogen ones seem pretty interesting and they advertize a lower power rating so that might not be so bad.

As of January 1st 2013 the production of 75 watt incandescent light bulbs has been banned. As soon as stores deplete their inventory of 75 watt incandescents on the shelf, bulbs will no longer be able to be purchased.

Thought I would give you guys heads up. If you want a cheap 75 watt bulb you better buy it now. Everytime I go to the store I pick up a couple.

I would have put this in the political section but instead of debating how stupid this ban is I think everyone should be aware so they can stock up.

Thanks!!

:iamwithstupid: It's a really stupid ban...I won't get into my political views on it here, there's a forum for that... But I've already converted most of my house & garage to compact fluorescents & H/O fluorescents, they do use less power, but also don't light as well either, the H/O's fluorescents in my garage are great thou... a 75 watt CF is like a 40 watt incandescent, a 60 watt CF bulb is like a 25 watt incandescent bulb, they are also like $3-$5 each, but since I have converted to compact fluorescents, "I haven't changed a bulb in over 5 years too"....

we need more LEDS!!!!!!!..... hahahahahahaha...
you could heat a room with incandescents as well... but the minute you bump them they go bright for a few secs and die off.
CF's are fine as long as you get the hi intensity ones.. I dont consider it a big deal. you save money using them even if you have more of them per square foot.
Light bulbs used to be made in the good ole US of A... at places where my grandparents worked Sylvania and GE and there is no reason they cant be made here again.

In fact as a kid my dad would take me to the plants parking lots and wathc all the RC guys with the planes and cars It was awesome...

Our house has 7 recessed ceiling light fixtures that have 75W incandescent flood lights in them now. They are rated for insulation contact so they are airtight and get very hot which isn't a problem for the IC bulbs. I can't use CFLs in them because they can't take the heat and are a fire hazard. Soon I won't be able to get IC floods so what do I do? The fixture manufacturer says that can buy an adapter kit that drops the lamps below the fixture for $137 per fixture. So it's going to cost me almost $1000 to convert these lights not counting the cost of the CFLs and that's if I do the work myself. How long do you think I'm going to have to burn these lights to break even on the energy savings? What a bunch of BS.

There are a whole boatload of Incans that not affected by the new specs, just use one of them. So simple it ain't worth complaining about that is if a solution actually is the goal.

Sure, other options are available right now, but for how long? Believe me, incandescent lighting is on it's way out and sooner than you might think.

Oh well, It's ok, have a good day sir. I at least tried to be helpfull.
Because for me... Honestly? Dilli***. Imho

When Sonny was a kid....we had 2/ 200watt bulbs in our garage and I can never remember replacing one!...they seem to last forever...but then again summer seem to last forever.

So we now are forced to pay more money, to use light bulbs made in China that contain some nasty crap that requires a HazMat team to dispose of, will cost more American jobs to be lost, just to save a bit of energy?

My 2c worth. Look in to LED globes guys. I am an electrician here in Australia, and have converted most of my house to LED globes. I have always hated CFL as they are dull on start up and can't be dimmed, so once LED became affordable, I committed. Eletricity prices are going through the roof here, so it made the decision easier. 100W incandescent is replaced by 15W LED, 75W = 12W, 60 = 10W. You calculate the power savings on what you pay per kWHr. Rule of thumb is lighting accounts for about 10-15% of your power bill, so there is an opportunity to save $ in the long term.

I'm with ya on that, just waiting for the price to drop a bit.
It ia all about the green, the green comming out of my hip pocket
