I have a 72 Satellite SP that has an open 8 1/4 rear end. I would like to change the diff over to a sure grip unit. I want to keep the original 8 1/4 housing in the car. I know on the 8 3/4 rear ends there are two types of sure grip (clutch or cone type). Does that hold true with the 8 1/4 rear end as well? Is the clutch unit better then the cone?

I've located a sure grip diff. for an 8 1/4, casting #18-05-039-903. Does anyone have information for that casting number to make sure it will fit a 72 8 1/4 rear end? The current owner of the diff doesn't know what the unit came out off.

The car will not be on the drag strip so the 8 1/4 should be fine for a little "street driving". I plan to install a 3.55 gear into the rear end.

No more single tire burnouts, working to resolve......

I don't know the details but you need to make sure you have the correct sure grip unit for your gear ratio. For example, if you plan to run 3.55's a SG from a 2.71 will not work.

I would just buy an 8 3/4" and just look for a center section with the ratio you want.
