I finally got around to disassembling the 727 out of the 86 ram 4x4. It was a strong shifting unit before removal and I don't expect to have to replace anything major in it. Just the usual suspects. I have not taken apart the sub assemblies yet because I do not yet have the master rebuild kit in hand. I used a manual written by Tom Hand. Very good reference book.

Looking good. Clean, Clean, Clean. That is key. Trans fluid is the best cleaning solvent.
I will now take the case to the carwash and get it spiffed up. Need to buy 5 gallons of trans fluid. lol and some assembly grease..and another can of parts cleaner..

Yes, “crusty” housing, lol. Go with a solid k/d band and a 3.2 k/d lever. Makes my heart beat heavily after not having done one for 30+ yrs. Not that hard in the overall scheme of things. Main thing is cleanliness and put tail end down when putting together.

I've never done a TF that wasn't laying on it's side. Hydramatics, yea, stand them up. I have been rebuilding TF's since 1970 and was a ASE certified Master Tech for 20 years.

Curious, everything seems so much easier when vertical for reassembly.

Before I made a stand I used to stand mine up against a bench with a drawer open to keep it from tipping. Carb cleaner works better on trans Mung than brake clean.

You mean like in a bucket or something with the bellhousing sticking up?

I will probably take an old tall chair that came with the wood table I use and cut a hole in the seat and drop the trans through. Should put it right up at table side level and nice and stable. lol.

That’s the way. I actually cut a hole in my workbench. Course, then had to stand on a milk crate!

This is what I rigged up to use for assembly on my 727.

It

It worked pretty well when I got to the point of laying it down on a furniture dolly after major assembly. Although this picture is the initial disassembly.

I'm strong enough to lift and carry the thing. No worries there. Putting it in the chair seat will get it right at the correct level to use the table beside it and sit on my other stool.

just bought a 727, complete,l
Just a note. If you are planning on making one trans out of the two you have. The front planetary splines vary in pitch angle from year to year. They appear the same. Do not mix an match. Keep the front planet with the output shaft it came with. The reaction shaft support/front drum change styles from 1970 down to 1971 up. Two different governor weight diameters, 1.00"/1.062". I can see from the pics the input shafts are of the same type, no worries there.

Yes, the 73 727 I have is a truck model with the short snout and output shaft. I bought this one for the longer output shaft and tail housing. I will take it apart in a bit. Eating lunch.
