Im sure many of you have done an intake and carb upgrade and kept the stock air cleaner and air grabber hood. I just cant find a thread about it anywhere.

I have a 383 with an Edelbrock Performer 383 intake & Holley 750. I have all the stock pieces (I think) for the air grabber hood option. When I measure the stock intake and carb and the edelbrock it looks like it will be about 1 1/2 inches taller than the stock iron manifold and carb set up. Im guessing once the hood is on the car, Im going to have some inteference issues. What is the solution? Cut down the factory black metal air cleaner base where it fits to the carb? Change the rubbers on the hood? Go back to stock and sell the aftermarket parts on ebay??? Any advice appreciated - (extra credit if you include photos!)

Engine is out of car, hood is off, so I dont really have a starting point of reference either.

thanks,

An Edelbrock DP4B will fit as it is only 1/2" taller than stock,

But most of the taller intakes will not without mods.

One thing to consider. a 383 is a B engine, while a 440 is a RB engine. Both were used with Air Grabbers.

440's, being Raised Blocks, are taller than a 383. The way the factory dealt with this was to change the air grabber baseplate. Simply put, a 440 air grabber base plate is less tall than a 383 air grabber base plate. So if you have a 383 and need some extra room, a 440 air grabber base plate will give you some extra room.

I am not sure the exact measurement difference between the two, but if you figure out the difference that may allow you to use a slightly taller intake manifold.

yep. search "MoPar dropped air grabber base." that should fix ya up.

When I first read that my brain read "MaPar dropped an air grabber base." and I was like damn! ... wonder how bad it dented it LOL

I am running a low deck (451) engine with a Holley Street Dominator intake, 1 " carb spacer, 780 Holley carb, air grabber hood on a 69 RR. When using the 440 base which sits lower than the 383 base, it hits the hood. If I remove the 1 " carb spacer, then it will fit ok.
