Anodized coating removal

I googled and read about methods, most popular hits was for ez off oven cleaner (yellow can) . Second method that was popular was lye cut with water but no specific instructions.
What is the best method that you guys have used?

I use the Easy Off. Soak, scrub with a scotch bright, rinse.

Todays Easy Off won't do it... at least not the crap we have up here. Covered in my Super Bee restoration thread... Lye crystals and water. Line a box with a sheet of 6 mil plastic and have at it.

Easy Off is a real pain and can damage aluminum pretty seriously. What I’ve been using is Lye for cleaning drains, etc. It works quickly (20-30 minutes). You need a pan to soak the part in. A pvc tube works fine for long trim or possibly a 5 gallon bucket. I have a sheet metal pan about 4’x1’x6” for some pieces. I use 12 - 16 teaspoons of lye per gallon of water, typically 12. Don’t leave the parts in too long, even some light anodizing still showing is not typically a problem as it is usually so degraded that it sands right off. Typically, after washing you have a smooth surface while Easy Off will erode, pit and scar up the surface in worse cases to where you have to start sanding with 120 or 180 sometimes. Depending on the amount it can be flushed as essentially it’s drain cleaner.

Back when I was racing we used -16 braided upper radiator hoses on our cars.

But I disliked the red and blue anodized finishes on the hose ends. The guy I bought my parts from told me to remove it with laquer thinner... voila it worked.

Maybe todays anodizing is different I dunno but it worked for me.
