Any tank nuts here? WW1, WW2 Korea, Vietnam?

After 224 pages, I'm sure this Chrysler A57 Sherman tank 5x6 FH motor has already been covered, first time I saw it was here in a Museum In London in 2006.

It was never clear to me, why with the treads so exposed and vulnerable, they weren't the first aim points to simply immobilize the tank at the least, and a follow-up shot when the best opportunity arose.
Were shells that limited in supply?

The Panther to the left has been immobilized and the crew has covered it with
foliage against air attack: note an anti-aircraft MG is mounted and ready to fire.
The other Panther has a towing cable in place ready for the recovery.

Anyone have any unique or unseen pics of the WW1 tanks, non internet finds?
