Anyone want to rate a combo? Street/strip car

Didn't read through all the replys, but my thought is that if you're building what will be a race car, or even a street-strip car, what you've outlined in the OP is WAY mild. You'll grow unsatisfied with it in no time. Here's some thoughts from me, my car would seem to be right about where you want to be:

-Don't be afraid to push the compression to 10.75:1. I run stealth heads and 36* on pump gas at that number, with no issues. Compression = Horsepower.
- More camshaft!! Something around 250* at .050 at a minimum; and ditch the hydraulic in favor of a solid.
http://www.compperformancegroupstor...oduct_Code=21-233-4&Category_Code=WDGCAMmFTXE
- lose the performer intake. Find an Eddy RPM or an M1 single plane if you push the cam profile past 255 @ 50.
- Good 850 DP.
- Don't scrimp on a converter. Call a reputable company like Dynamic or Ultimate and let them build one to suit your application.
- Ultimately, To get to where you want to go, you'll need deeper gears. If it's a daily driver, I understand not wanting to go too deep, but if this is a weekend only toy, go straight to 3.91's or 4.10's. you won't regret it.

Best wishes, and happy hotrodding.

You want 11s just put a single plane on it and a plate and spray your way there.

Funny finding this thread again. Forgot I started it!
Anyway, for those of you interested, here's what I ended up doing.
Stock stroke 440 with ly rods forged .030 icon Pistons .010 in the hole.
Holley 850/street dominator with 1" spacer
Had a small hydraulic cam at first.(239@ .050 490/492 lift. Went 7.70 @ 92 mph in the 1/8 mile with this cam). Got my drag racing feet wet with this cam and quickly got bored with it. You guys were right!
Just installed a bullet solid cam. 251/255 @ .050 .557/.568 lift 108 separation
Mopar distributor all in at 34. 30 initial
2" tti headers
Trick flow 240 heads. These heads rule!
727 with manual valve body and 9.5" ultimate converter
3.54 Dana 275/60 Mickey Thompson drag radials 3400 lb ss springs. Looking into cal tracs now.
Haven't run it yet but will take it out soon!
Installing a driveshaft loop and torque strap this weekend. Then the track. Has good street manners but I can't wait to see what it will run. I'll keep you guys posted. Thanks again for the help!

That's a great idea, mostly because I've also got a street n strip too. My set up doesn't compare to yours. It is also a daily driver. I drive 60 miles to the track with a tool bag and a cooler in the trunk. Only thing to add is that the car is a compromise - not a race car - not a family car. But when you're bracket racing , who cares.

Glad to see you’re moving along and having fun! The way you’re set up right now the car should be good for mid to high 11’s, depending on weight.
One of the things you’ll find is that everything is a compromise. The more cam and intake you go with, the better your top end charge, but the low end suffers. This is where gearing comes into play. With 3.54’s and 275 (28”) tires, don’t be too surprised if it lags a little out of the hole until it hits its stride around 4500 / 5000. In order to really transfer weight and “leave”, my feeling is you’ll need deeper gears at some point. Also, if you go to Cal-Traks, do the full meal deal and also run the split mono springs and Calvert shocks. That system is proven; standard spring-rates just get in the way of what the bars are trying to do.
I run 4.10’s and a 28” tire, and I hit my shiftpoint (6200) at around 1200 ft, which is about perfect. On the highway, My car is at roughly 3000 rpm at 65mph.
BTW: I’ve driven this gearing 175 miles on the interstate before with zero issues. A motor with cam in the range of yours should be real comfortable there. Of course the fuel consumption may not be as comfortable on your wallet as you’d prefer. Haha. Keep keeping us posted on your progress.

Hosehead, are you still in Pasadena? I see a maroon 65plymouth with a big block at irwindale quite often, thought that might be you, but I see you haven't run yours yet.
Unless you are one of those " unless it's a quarter mile it isn't a drag race ' types, I would suggest irwindale instead of the drive to fontana. Show up early on Thursday and you will probably get plenty of passes, and can diagnose the front half of a full pass for tuning purposes. The important part is showing up early.
It could be I'm out in left field here, because irwindale may have been closed when this was first posted.

I’ve run my car a bunch of times at irwindale last year. It is heavily patinaed. Faded gold paint with red primer showing underneath. This look familiar?

And thanks lemon wedge! I’m having a blast! I’ll probably leave the gears for now as I street drive this car frequently. I’m trying to see how fast it will go as a street car for now. I’ll probably upgrade to the Calvert setup soon and a friend has suggested that I try a victor intake which I might also do. This car is super fun right now but I am realizing you always want to go faster. Also, I know irwindale will shut you down at a certain et without a roll bar.

Hosehead , i have seen your car at irwindale! Next time i see it i'll introduce myself!
(Irwindale will bounce for going too fast, but you really have to rub their noses in it. The one i remember was an izzys performance 1/2 ton standard cab chevy, with a twin turbo 427ci ls. It went6.0?/ 130 with a lap belt and no bar! Got thrown out before he could turn onto the return road!)
They gave me a little grief about going 6.30s without a license so i just started short shifting and shutting off a little early, and they let it go.

I like the Holley 850 DP on a street/strip car. I ran the same 850 DP on my old 440 and my newer 440/493 combo but I had to jet up a bit on the new combo. Drives great on the street and has run 10.70's in full street trim just as I drive it as I drive it to the track and race it as driven. Ron

Ron’s car is the Gold Standard for an old school street/strip B body!

Yep, love Rons car. There are a few early b's here that are pretty inspiring. Ill keep you guys posted on my progress.
Can't wait to get back to the track.

Yes! Please introduce yourself next time! Us mopar guys have to stick together out there!

Funny you mention that. My budget is lagging behind my desire for a stroker motor, and I almost pulled the trigger on a set of TF 240s (which I WILL, according to what was discussed in that thread with IQ52) but instead I bought some Viking double adjustable front shocks and some cheap 3 way adjustable CEE-2730 rears, a driveshaft safety loop, a line lock I still need to install, and the best Dana 60 adjustable pinion snubber Mancini offered....and bent the snubber on my 1st run, and put it out of its misery on the 2nd. It was rubbing on my pinion yoke. Popped it off and got to drive home. Also bought about everything except fuel bowls Promax offers for the 6 bbl. and I will be getting my carbs back soon.
Anyway I have a spray plate for the center carb and I'm going to go with a "light shot" around 100HP to have some fun with in the meantime.

My swap from the stock 3.54 to the 4.10 after I swapped out my 18 spline 833 for a Passon 855 has been "fun". 750 less RPMs in 5th with the 4.10s vs 4th with the 3.54s. I shift around 6k.
My focus now is on improving traction and my 3 x 2 bbl carbs will be back from Promax soon.
Crusin the Coast is in 8 weeks and I have to install and tune my carbs, my wife's 3 Rochesters for her 421 TriPower 65 GTO are coming back from All American Carburetors soon, AND her car is getting a new Quick Performance Ford 9" based rear axle assembly that has yet to be ordered....

Drives great on the street and has run 10.70's in full street trim just as I drive it as I drive it to the track and race it as driven. Ron
That is awesome!
What about the rear tires? Do you put slicks on at the track?
