I honestly don't know if this ever worked when I bought the car, but the button seems to be always depressed so it never really locks into a position.

Is there an obvious solution?
thanks

Probably a bad spring, or the button is worn and rotated and no longer in alignment inside the shifter housing. Might have to pull it all apart and find what is binding up.

If you can unscrew the button. Should have a spring inside. May have to loosen set screw in otter piece, button jammed?

In the FSM it tells how to adjust the linkage with the button. And you half to undo the set screw and either screw it in or out until the button sits level with the knob. But it has been probably 20 years since did one. It does need the spring.

Make sure the set screw is backed off, I think the shifter should be in neutral for that adjustment.
Best is to read the FSM.

hmm.. okay, so i pulled the knob and there just isn't a spring in at all? I guess someone just slapped it back together without it for whatever reason.

I just put mine back together this evening, doing the carpet.
If you need it I can take it apart again and get a picture of the spring.
It only takes a minute.

I'd say the spring is 1 -1/2" or maybe 1-3/4" it's not a heavy spring.

yeah.. my first guess was actually 1.5 but then with the spring standing in the link it almost seemed longer... but maybe odd angle.

Fran:
I think that might be an older year?
Mines a '74 and that handle in the photo isn't round like the '74 it seems.

I believe those are drawings believe it or not.
Your first guess was a good one. The spring is not as long as the picture would indicate.

EDIT: Started a new thread on this since the topic changed.

i don't think my first few guesses are working.

I picked up 2 springs. both ~1.5" in length
One that just fit the ID of the knob and one with the diameter to just fit the OD of the button. (not sure of the exact mechanics)
Anyone have measurements i could use?

I just cannot seem to get it to start the threading on the linkage. only when there isn't spring does it seem to actually thread... so i'm wondering if my length is too long?

thanks

Mega parts has just the spring $10. Look under new products page 21, if you haven't found one.
