We took my dad up to Yipsilante (sp.?) Michigan a few years back to ride a B-17. Highly recommend it.
My grandfather flew 32 missions on the lucky lady in 1943.
It meant a lot to my dad and to my brother and I.

Very heartbreaking on many levels to see this today.

76 year old planes should not fly to often, to many things can fail

Pretty sure these planes are better maintained than your daily driver.. Just like a fuel pump in your car it can happen at any time. I doubt the age of the plane has anything to do with it. How safe would you feel knowing that most of the commercial airline planes date back to the 70's not saying that is 100% true but I'm sure some of them are old too. Also, The C130 planes you see flying around have been in the air since the 50's they get retrofitted and sent back up.

I hardly think 1 crash is enough for these planes to be grounded. Its way different than a commercial flight hauling 200 passengers that crashes and kills hundreds of people. Its an isolated indecent and should be treated as such.

Prayers to all who were lost and their loved ones! On a different note I walked through a couple old bombers in AZ and it gives you a whole new appreciation for the crews that flew missions. I can't imagine hours on end in one.

Very sad loss, both human and airplane.

Maintained? You better believe it! Average, just as on the B-25, I was engineman on, 10 hours of ground work, for every 1 hour of flying time. Bottom line, can't really say what happened. One engine out, touched down okay...then, 'something' happened, during the roll out.

several witnesses have said they saw one engine not running. one said that the others were missing. Now if you've never heard radials, you might mistake a good running engine for having a miss. This sounds like a fuel problem since it affected all the engines. One of the B-17 Facebook groups is saying there is a report of jet fuel mistakenly have been used to refuel Nine O Nine
