When we are old we have many "back in the day" stories.
This is a pic. of a carbide lamp that my grandfather wore on his hard hat in the coal mines in West Virginia.
He was a mine inspector at the time (not an easy job in those days).
The coal companies despised his kind.
He passed on before I was born and my mom told me that he was a mean man cause he needed to be for his job. He had power and made life for many last longer than before his time.
Coal mines were hell in the earth and many died.

I've been caving several times with carbide lamps.

The cool thing about them is that there's naturally occurring carbide in the Appalachian area (& lots of the mid-west) and you can power the lamps just by scooping carbide out of the caves.

My youngest fell over my tow chains that I towed the Bee to drags in middle 70's. Put his nose right in to the open top. Blood everywhere, he ripped off the velcro straps that were holding him down in the ER. 2-3yrs old at the time,he doesn't remember a thing, but I do.

We used to take those tabs, straighten them back out and put a coat of black tape on each side. they used to work the same as aquarter in the local car wash. every kid in town had one on his signal lever and a clean car!! lol

Beer tabs also made a great substatute for whores beads in a doorway.
