Trying to sell my car has been a resounding flop so I'm probably going to keep it. I bought this car because of memories of another 67 GTX I owned back in the 70s. The look and feel of the car is spot on but I have not been happy with the engine mods and overall performance so if I keep it I think I want to take it back to factory specs. The first change will be to remove the "Hemi Mufflers" which I think are just empty shells and replace with actual mufflers similar to 440 specs. Can't stand the noise and drone! After that I want to:
  • Replace the lumpy cam with the stock 268/284 440 Magnum cam
  • Replace the MP high rise intake with the OEM iron manifold.
  • Replace the Edelbrock carb with an OEM AFB or AVS.
Back in the 70s I remember changing the cam, carb, trying a Tarantula manifold, even adding a six pack setup and not being happy with any of it, when I put it back to stock it ran the best. Has anyone else gone this route and done a retrofit?

you never considered an efi project for the car? you might enjoy it.

That is a beautiful GTX. If I may share the same problem, In 2001 I purchased a rust free GTX, and it showed every possibility of being a show winner. Like a Dummy in 2002 I purchased one of the first 426 hemi crate engines in order to Install it in my 440 car. All the work, the exhaust,linkage,etc wound up to $15,000 Dollars. The engine was a lemon, as Chrysler at the time had a real quality problem with the product. The engine was not properly line bored, and the wrong bearings were Installed during assy. I had to pay to fix this brand new "HEMI" just to resell it. So, I had the original 440 in a container, so I rebuilt the original engine and the car to exactly to the specs the car conformed to in 1967, down to the Original exhaust. Now, 15 years later, the car is still a dream to drive, runs like a million bucks, and even cranks and starts at -20 below out in the shed. The 440 is a sweetheart, and Chrysler can keep that darn crate motor. I at least recovered my $15,000 by reselling everything, but what a pain!
Go original, and drive the car! Chrysler made the car that way for a reason. And, they are worth more if you kick off and your Wife has to sell it.

My car blew a 440 racing 30yrs ago. Put together a stock 440(with oem 383hp cam from original 383) and that’s the way it’s stayed. I shyed away from going to drags for many yrs, it always got the juices flowing too much!

Not really, I think that would be taking it much further into mod territory from where it is right now.

Now that is painful! At least you broke even, since it appears I am already overinvested in my car what's a few more bucks! Hopefully I can make these changes myself and keep it economical.

My racing days are long gone, this car is strictly street driven and I just want it to have a few more manners.
 
Monaco66coupe, I also bought a crate 472 hemi in 2002. I had so many problems with it Chrysler took it back and a month later I received a new one. I had rocker arm adjusters breaking and leaking oil between head and block and it was all because they had **** parts to begin with. That is why they had Cummins Diesel putting them together because they didn't check anything. The speed shop that started to build them could only build one a week because of the bad parts. If it wasn't for the dealer I bought it from I probably would have had to fix it myself. He went the extra mile to make me happy.

Do what makes you happy. I've been working on my GTX for 8 years bring it back to stock..
 
Stick as close to stock as possible while taking advantage of todays technology.
I am getting ready to re-build original motor. Sticking with her 915 heads and having machined and ported. Going to use stroker kit (505). Will use Holley Street Dominator intake and Holley carb. All original parts to be kept in storage. Still undecided about TTI headers or original manifolds. Leaning towards TTI. Transmission and rear end (323) to remain the same with a shift kit in trans and replace other worn parts once we get inside.
I figure if we are going to rebuild let's add a little juice. It will always be a street driver that can hopefully whup some ***. Also will be wife driven.

i did what your wanting to do to my 69 r/t. i'm using the re-pop 440/hemi mufflers and like them. I also have the original intake and carb on the engine now. cam is a toss up. there are several camshafts that can be used without giving up the "stock" drive and performance. the stock magnum cam is fine; but a summit 6400 or 6401, mopar 272/.455 are decent alternatives. be sure the valve springs match the camshaft.

You are so right regarding the poor quality. I waited past the 90 day warranty, so Chrysler told me tough!
My good friend that rebuilt the 440 agreed to fix the engine,and charged me only $1,000 bucks.I had been able to buy it for 9300 bucks, so at least I was in the ballpark.As luck had it, at that time Chrysler had discontinued production, so when I put the engine on Ebay, their was not one Hemi to be found anywhere.It went for 12,000.Of course now I could guarantee it.
The story has a weird twist though, Not 30 minutes after the winning bid, someone else emailed me wanting to know where to send the deposit,as the email on paypal wasn't working. I said: What? Who are you? he said he had the winning bid. I Informed him that no, he was not. Apparently a hacker had posted my engine for sale, and was trying to divert some money from an unsuspecting buyer.My son traced the email address to France, and the account had just been activated an hour before the end of bidding. I consequently froze the transaction until I could verify the actual winner was real. He was, and the deal went through. I told him he had 30 days to put that engine in a car and start it, or no guarantee.
Two years later, that knucklehead called me up, and said he was selling it, to please guarantee the engine to the next guy, since he didn't start it. I couldn't believe the nerve! I reminded him that I said 30 days, not two years, and that engine could have gone around the world twice for all I know. And, don't call me again!
This happened in 2004.
Now for what it is worth, I can say for the limited time it ran, the TTI exhaust was awesome! Three inch,and ran cool all the time! I still have the correct hemi Torque converter, and the gaskets for the choke pull off to the Intake. I think the auto Kickdown is the tool box as well. Never Install a three inch exhaust header on a Hemi with Power steering. Torture! I have to say the Ford Guys were Impressed when looking at it back then.(My Painter was Fomoco all the way) Poor guy.

Well, I'm not a professional like you,no disrespect; but all this talk starts the memories flowing again. You are the 1st one I look for on a response for anything engine related. Jeff
 
I've pretty much maintained my GTX towards the stock side. I do have an 800 Edelbrock carb on it to replace the 650 AVS that was on it when I bought it and added linkage to work the choke as a divorced system. I also installed a 2-1/2 inch TTI system with their supplied Dynomax turbo mufflers. If anything it's too quiet to me, but probably is a good overall compromise. I also re-worked my Mopar distributor to build in a custom advance curve to allow a bit more initial timing. I figure that helps the stock engine breath and exhaust as freely as possible while maintaining the good engine manners of a stock engine. Lately I have ventured a bit from stock with a 3.55 rear and a bit looser torque converter since I don't spend much time on highways.

My one time experiment many, many years ago with a hotter cam in a stock 383 hi-po ended unsatisfactorily for me. It hurt low end performance and the small valve heads couldn't take advantage of the additional duration and lift. My car is full power with AC, heavy and no racer, so it needs to stay with a stock cam and intake. But, it still moves out pretty strong for what it is, in it's present configuration and idles quietly and smoothly.

i'm not a professional by any means. just an old guy who's made a lot of mistakes and haven't forgot most of them. I think some of the biggest mistakes I've made in the car stuff was letting the crowd mess up common sense decisions.
