These pieces have been together since 1977, until a super senior took them apart for a few changes.
There is probably a secret to putting the tail shaft back on, but no need to tell me, I will try not to take it apart again.
The circlip thing was on the bottom, hiding behind the rear mount. Had planned on working on the heads today, but put that of until tomorrow. Auto store had the rear seal, but not the gasket. Middle bearing spun fine.

The new camshaft and lifters are in place, along with the oil pump drive.

Pretty fancy rope work for the sling!

I find the rope is easier to connect and adjust than chain, but it does get dirty. Starting at the bottom right, there is a bowline connecting the rope to the shackle. Thru the eye on the chain, to the shackle on the other side, back to the chain with one half hitch and a loop. Practice gave me the location of the chain. Then around tne tail and back to the loop from the half hitch. Close to the engine, I was able to ease the rope a bit to lower the tail shaft and line it up.
I will mostly use chain to lift the engine, as it is heavier, and a pain to maneuver in the van. I will drop the drive shaft when bunging it back in. Good idea from Doug. And I need to get the exhaust pipes out of the way.

Do you have enough height to lift the van, roll the engine and trans underneath ,drop the body down, works slick with cars.
Samson braid is very useful.

Probably not, but I will look and report back.
Just my suggestion. Measure the height of your engine on a 4 wheel dolly low stand. Measure the height of the roof of the van to the ceiling. If it is more than the height of the engine you are good.
What the HELL IS a stubble jumper who grew up on the farm telling you this!!.
When we didn’t have a garage we would go to places that rented stalls so a person could work on their vehicles.

No way I'd put the engine in from the bottom of a van. Much less a camper van. Bad news.

I don't think it's possible. Isn't the engine cradle part of the frame?

The front cross member gets in the way from bottom up approach. There is also a roof problem. As well as the lifting from the front, I need to lift from inside. And block from underneath. There is not enough room for the rocker covers and the distributor. The master cylinder, the wiper motor, the blower motor and other stuff also had to be removed.

Thank you. We will be selling our 85 Vanguard 360 B350 this year. So I know I will never need to do any engine or transmission work.

Once upon a time, with much lighter weight English four cylinder engines, and no sky hooks, and limited tools.
We would use a spade / shovel as a pry bar, and a greased board under the engine. There would be a slight rise to clear the front end, but an engine could be removed, with not too much difficulty.

Putting the mighty 318 in Tukvan, with two lifting chains ( more if needed ) and a down hill slope, I will probably use a similar plan. This time I will probably start with the engine tilted down at the back. That will get it over the front cross member. The exhaust manifolds bash against the sides.
I can move the sky hook in thru the passenger door, to lift the rear of the transmission. That should take place next week on a non rainy day.

The Tukvan is parked under and in the erection shop. I built this to lift my boat off the trailer. There is a chain hoist on each corner. The roof was built at ground height, and lifted then clamped in place up high.

Make yourself a small tan to hold the conbeter from falling out. Make it to fit off one of the small bottom bell housing shield holes. That way you can leave it attached during trans installation.

All engine parts are together, except the power steering pump. Hopefully I will get that sorted. Next step is to get the exhaust and drive shaft out of the way. I will also clean and paint some parts while I have room. And make plans to bung the mighty 318 and 727 back in the hole. I need a few small bits for the new carb, like nuts to hold it down, and fuel line bits.
