In my down time, which I have a lot of since I'm disabled, I get to thinking about what could be done to some of the smaller cid Mopar engines and wonder if any one here has tried it or thought about it.
first thing that came to mind was stroking (4") that little 273 I have and making it a 331. maybe not practical but a thought.
Then the thought came to me of maybe putting 360 heads on it, to lower the compression, and turbo charging it.
Now some might say why don't you just throw a big block or a stroked 318, 340 or 360 in it. Well I'm one of those people that believes that I already have an engine, why buy another, then change k members (for the bb) etc. Also there is something that I have always liked about opening a hood with what looks like a completely stock engine that isn't or taking the engine out to the "that's different but cool" mark. Now none of this means I'm going to do it. Just dreaming and playing with ideas. Any one else???

The small bore on the 273ci will be the biggest issue with getting as much flow & power as possible or let alone any cubic inches out of it, the 4" stroker in even a lowly 318 block with a 4" stroke is 390ci minimum & you could put 273 valve covers on it, those extra 60 ci's are really hard to beat... Either way, make sure to use a set of well ported cylinder heads, with larger valves, would work well, you may have to cut notches in the side of the top of the cylinder walls to clear the valve & un-shroud them on a small bore engine, just to get any decent flow out of the heads & have the valve clear the sides of the cylinder bore... IMHFO the price of the custom pistons for the 273 block would negate any saving by sticking with the 273ci Block & allot of cars the 273-383's or 440's the K-Members are the same or will work with a BB or other SB, the torsion bars & mounts are different thou, depends on the years.... the turbo-ed 273ci screamer would be interesting... there's a reason for everyone saying "there's no replacement for , displacement" because it's all 100% true... even just between a 273 & a 318 with all the same work done, the 318 will be better...

Not saying "it can't be done", but it is allot cheaper & easier to do it the other way

try looking @ Schumacher Creative Services www.engine-swaps.com, if you plan on any engine changes, in early/odd years or K-Members etc.

Sorry, I'm not trying to be a kill joy or buzz kill, just being honest....

No problem. Bench racing it helps the pro's and cons without spending a dime. No kill joy no harm no foul

yeah sometime people don't like to hear that kind of stuff, glad you took it the right way, don't let me discourage you... Just trying to help the only way I know how, spreading the knowledge forward, so to speak, like so many people that helped me, years ago...
