I drove around at night to adjust the headlights and was disappointed at the 5" tach light was brighter than the dash very distracting, it's on the steering column and needs to move. What would be the best spot? Or different tach?

my favorite place is on top of the console in the stock location for '67. i only use the tach for engine monitoring while driving around town and idling. when racing, a bright shift light mounted elsewhere would be ideal for me. just because i think a big dial with a bunch of numbers and lines on it is a little distracting when trying to shift precisely and drive fast.

I had a custom tach, oil pressure and temp guage cluster made for my car. The fabricator mis-understood what I was describing. I asked that it would be installed on the steering column with a clamp and rubber underneath so no holes would have to be drilled anywhere. He built it to center on top of the column centered right in front of the speedo. I guess he thought I didn't care about reading the speedo. After spending the money for the custom housing I salvage it by turning it 90 degrees as you can see in the pictures.

I made a billet bracket out of aluminum and clamped it in place. The red light is the line lock, which was added later. I can't see the fast end of the speedo but everything else is accessible. The tach is a $5.00 swap meet special.

I have a center console and have been considering moving everything to the top half near the dash but not sure I want to look down at the tach, I'm nutty about monitoring the gauges I guess. here's a pic triple set not in that same spot anymore off to the right which sux too going to move them back to this after I deal with the tach. just cant drop down the ash tray door lol.

Have you considered getting any of those silicone or rubber caps that go over the light bulb for the tach light? It either changes the color of the light emitted or calms it down a bit.

Another thought is this. I did this for a lot of bulbs on my cars. I got the bulb style (194, 1157,etc) and entered that "1157 bulb" and searched e-bay for them. Thousands of options came up including LED and SMD bulbs. Just add a LED on the end of description. I bought entire SMD bulb pack (10-20 bulbs) for like $1 plus $3 in shipping. You can get bulbs in dimmer and brighter lights, even different colors. Heck, I even got blue bulbs for my front marker/turn signal lights for my '66 belvedere. The nice thing is that the LED and SMD bulbs are much brighter if you want them that way and take a lot less energy to power.

Not a big fan of the 5" tachs,if it was me i would change it out for a 3.5".Smaller tach gives a few more mounting location options.

Custom Gauge panel 68 RR

I have posted these before in a separate thread, cost about $450-$500, not the cheapest way to go for sure, but I think it will look very good when finally installed in my resto-rod pro-touring custom 68 RR, 7 gauge panel, 2-1/16" & 3-3/8" gauges, from left to right "volts, fuel, Tach, Speedo, water, oil, clock, 5/16" led chrome bezeled warning lights along the top are, red e-brake, green left turn ind., blue high beam, green rt. turn ind., yellow low oil pressure warning.... Sorry for the quality of the photos & it's still not installed as of yet, too many irons in the fire....

Have you installed it yet?

Believe it or not it's not the shift light that is too bright but the light illuminating the tach it's self.

Mine is in the 2 oclock position of my dash. Plenty of good visibility there plus the larger size helps to see it. I run with the cap off my shift light unless it's dark.
