Believe it or not it's not the shift light that is too bright but the light illuminating the tach it's self.

Sorry, maybe I wasn't clear. That is the bulb I was referring to, the one for the tach face itself.

Have you thought about connecting the dials back light to the "dimming output" same as the dash lights?

i like the super stock look of them on the dash for me on a 62-65 car so thats where mine went.
