I am finally going to start building a motor for my sons 69 satellite.

I bought a 70 RR in 1973 and had that car until 1997 when our home burnt down. My car was in the garage and could not be saved. I was able to salvage the motor and Dana rear end. It was a 6bbl car with 4:10 dana. I also save the rear springs.
Any way the numbers on this block have always confused me. Help would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Just a guess on the S440 that the S might designate that it was an over the counter service replacement block. Looks like it was cast feb of 1970.

Service / warrantee engine

... I'd love that engine.. :p
Ya...that's cool...haven't seen a block with that stamping before! Most likely a service/ warranty job. Someone was enjoying the 4:10 Dana a bit, and popped the original short block

Ok I will throw a new wrinkle to it. I was 13 in 1973. A bunch of older guys let me hang out with them. The one who bought this car in 1970 was one of them. I believe he bought it sept of 1970. 2 months later he went to war and never came home. When his mom let me buy it. It ran ok but had a pop. one lobe on the came was basically gone. The car had 2500 miles on it. I know for sure the motor was never changed out. He had never even changed the oil when he left and parked it in his back yard.
When I was older I noticed the markings but in 1977 there was not much info or a way to find out what it meant?

And oh yes he did enjoy it. I went to beeline drag strip with him 2 times. Haha, my parents were so ignorant to what 19 year old kids do in cars. But I lived thru it. And took my boys on the same kind of rides in the late 80's and early 90's

I'm assuming he wasn't the original owner buying it Sept of 70. Bought, motor blown, dealership made a deal and put a service long block in it and resold it.

Your story is not making sense. The guy went to war aprox. nov. of 1970 and never came home. So how can you be in a group with him in 1973???

Sorry, I'm not a good story teller. I started with them in 68, out of the group 3 did not make it home. I met them because one was my little league coach.. and all his friends would come help and the older guys would be in nice cars.

I bet a salesman or someone at the dealership broke it. He was the only owner. I was the second. I will try and get a better photo. It looks like there are punch marks that cover other marks?

I also still have my original title, in my parents name from when I bought it. It showed a little over 2500 miles. I will see if I can dig it up.

There should be a VIN on the 4 speed and build dates. The Dana 60 also should have information.

2563430 -Casting number for 66-72 440 block.
- 5 = 5th core revision/freshening of the casting mold used
Block cast 2-9(?)-70
S = 440 = service replacement
Appears to have been assembled 3 31 (1970) 2nd shift.

Please notice this pad is not stamped HP as the original assembly would have been. Meaning we do no know what internal components this particular assembly may have come with. The gut's from the original 6bbl motor may have been used but we do not know what was used from this particular stamp.

B = .010 undersized rod and main bearings.
W = possibly water tested.

Is there a serial number stamped on the passenger's side of the block?

One other thing caught my eye. The valley area looks to be painted. I never saw a production, service, or warranty engine with a painted valley.
