breaking tires loose on second gear

like this? But its an automatic.

I used to love passing people on the interstate by coming up behind them at 60 MPH in 4th, banging it into second and hammering it...passing with the tail kicked out to left with the tires ignited. Only got caught 3 times.

That's a 12" tire on hot pavement at a roll in a heavy car.....You have no where near enough power to do John Force burnouts in second. A stock 383 might do it with bias ply resto tires or super hard junk wal mart tires but not with any kind of sticky tire and no way in hell with a 12" radial. Some of you guys have told a few too many "way back when" stories.... lol....

I've got pretty much the same set up, except I have a sure grip. and a six pack. Once I get the wheels spinning, they will continue to spin , no matter what gear. usually it starts going side to side, and I have to let off.
I have to give it a few quick revs and slip it a little to produce any tire slippage. with 12" radial tires it's pretty hard to break em loose on a whim. even harder with posi. ahem I mean a sure grip.

I had a similar problem on my 383 rite after the engine was rebuilt. Went back .030, 650 vac secondary carb, bigger cam, alluminun intake & headers with 410 gears. It just didnt have the punch I thought it should have. My (Chevy) minded machinest checked my valve springs & said they were ok. After a while I went & purchased new valve springs on my own & went to another machine shop to have them installed plus changed to a 750 DP. It was like an entirely different engine. Before it wouldnt hardly chirp the tires in 2nd. After the change it would break loose the tires just by easing into the throttle in 2nd and continue spinning into 3rd. By the way it was a 4 spd.

put my old mastercraft tires on i think there 17 wide and summit 750 mechanical carb ripes on second gear now........
