Bringing back the slant six

You are asking a 48 year old question. But I think it was kept under 6000. Slants are known for their bottom end the boost did help tremendously.
I guess I don't understand how four main bearings and skinny rods (in a stock setup) as being well known.....

Apparently, nor did the rest of the world. I remember my dad's Rambler with a "Seven Main Bearings" decal proudly on the valve cover of his 232 inline six.

I don't keep up with inline 6's all to closely but iirc, most of them have 7 and have beefier rods. Maybe 'mom' knew something that the others didn't? But I have seen rods kick out of /6's before and when you see a stock engine with a hole in the block, it tells me something since things are not known for pulling high rpms with the tiny cams and valves in them. The one that was in my Belvedere wouldn't go over 4800 for any reason....and it actually ran pretty good for having 128k miles on it.

May as well just use the LTP moniker :D And yeah, it did sound good! I ran a single straight on my 67 Dart 3 speed stick with simple mods like air cleaner, light weight fan, more timing, bigger 'jet' in the factory Holley AND 3.91 gears. Never took it to the track though but going by butt feel....maybe mid/high 15's? There wasn't many stock V8's around the mid 70's that was walking away from it. It didn't sound bad imo and that was my first straight pipe on any car and it went down hill from there :D The only time I've ever been stopped for excessive noise was 'due to spinning tires' and why I didn't get wrote up on the pipe.....is anyone's guess because I was really on it as hard as it could go. Mat the gas and dump the clutch and spin city with that thing. Had to warm up the street tires so they would hook and no, didn't tell the cop that.

One would think that the Australian slant 6 with the Hemi head would be better suited to be a hi-po engine.

Do they do everything backward down there?
Having a 14 second six cylinder engine may be backwards compared to what we expected from a six, but that doesn't make it a bad thing. Besides, that engine was designed in Highland Park, Michigan - for the Australian market. At least it had a strong seven bearing bottom end to match the top end breathing.

I run a straight pipe on my 66 coronet and people think it's a v8 funny but it dose sound good .

I only ever had one slant six. It was in a ‘71 Scamp. It had a red finned valve cover so it might have been an earlier engine. It started, and took you places. Between the complete lack of power and the 9” brakes that barely stopped the thing... My ‘70 R/T with E87 D21 and B51 11” drums felt like a car that handled compared to it.
