builds that piss you off

Anything that uses slapper bars on a Mopar is a build that pisses me off

I have broken three 8 3/4's over the years. But they all came out of junk yard cars. All three broke in the same place so one day I will just buy a Dana.
That Barry White guy need a few teeth knocked out too....He likes big wheels and Ford rears in his Mopars also.

I didn't know the guy, but he didn't seem very.....personable. Foose on the other hand seems to be a real stand up guy.

Had a few run ins with Boyd, nothing impressive. I'm just glad I am not one of the folks who bought stock in his first HotRod/Wheel company. All I will say is check out the stock history and the timing of his sudden "vacation".

O.K. , Keep in mind not all 8 3/4s are created equal,..... I NEVER broke a good one and NEVER used the lesser ones,...... You have 3 different pinion sizes used in these, They can easily be identified by casting numbers on the cases. Use the last three numbers in the casting numbers and the year used and pinion sizes are broken down below:

657 (up to 64)and 741 (64 and later) Small pinion, 1 3/8
742 (57 to 68) Large pinion, 1 3/4
489 (69 to 74) Tapered pinion, 1 7/8

Hope this helps someone.

O.K. back to topic , " Builds that piss you off "
Here's a few things that piss me off:

1 - Mopars with Chevy style cowl induction hoods !

2 - "Cross Breaders", Car that have an engine made by another manufacturer. especially Mopar power plants in brand X cars !

3 - Those Goofy-Assed, Coffee can size exhaust tips, especially when they are installed on muscle cars.

Anybody else got any ?

1964 Ford F-100 with a 1989 Dodge 360 4-bbl. factory roller cam engine & T/F-727 transmission (going overdrive soon though).
The truck runs great (we just rebuilt the engine prior to installation), it had a 'Vette 350 in it when we bought it.

Builds don't rub me the wrong way...it's the owners that do.

Ford 9 Inch rears in a mopar

Guys get a life the guys who use ford 9 inch rears do it for a very good reason. First you have three teeth contacting the ring gear. Second the larger axel bearing. Third try to find a decent dana 60 for a mopar. Most guys cant afford a dana 60. THe fords are still alot cheaper and readily available. They break less than most if not all 8 3/4 rears. dont give many bs ive been around mopars longer than most of you. if you knew what you where talking about you would not make a comment about 9 inch ford rears. Go look at all the dragsters see what alot of them use.

I built my Dana 60 with posi for around $750... That included the rearend new 35 spline moser axles, bearings etc. etc. etc. Try building your Ford 9" for that... Last time I checked, the third member with desirable gear and posi was over $900. Not hard to find a truck Dana and have one made. Would rather do that then the "cross-breading" as described earlier.

This ought to really piss some of you guys off then, LOL!

My 68 Sport Satellite has been converted to a 383/727 by the guy I got it from. The original 3.23 sure grip is gone and a 2.73 open diff is in it's place. I'm planning on ditching the 8 3/4 in favor of a late model Mustang 8.8 with a 3.73 and Eaton posi that I got for free from work. The Mustang axle is only 3/4" narrower than the 8 3/4 and of course, the bolt pattern is the same, 5 x 4 1/2. I'm also contemplating a T-5 as it is probably the least expensive way to get a manual trans behind the 383. This car is meant to be a budget street driven hotrod. In the original days of hot rods, you ran what you had. Guys ran Flat Heads in just about anything that had wheels. Then the Small Block Chevy came along and later, the Hemis. Sorry if it pisses off the purists, but get over it...this was originally a 318 car. It's mine and I'll do what I want with it.

I understand the need to keep things original when it's important. I put my '73 340 4-speed Challenger back to very much stock condition (right down to the polyglass tires)before divorce forced sale back in '93.
