Cable melted!?

OK. You said that the solenoid kicks one time and then nothing. Next, try a KNOWN good battery out of another car and see what happens. It's possible for a battery to show 12 volts but have a shorted cell (and will turn a starter without a load on it). That's why a 'battery load test' is a good idea. At any rate if another battery cranks the motor we'll know. I also recommend removing the ground cables (bat. to engine, and engine to frame/firewall) and brightening up the contact faces to insure good grounds. If a different battery gives you the same results, try to hand crank the motor with a socket on the balancer bolt. You want to make sure the motor is free to turn. Hang in there!!!

I went through a bunch of crap last year with my 64. I ended up taking all the wiring out from under the dash and hood and going through it all. I've also had starters that bench tested fine but wouldn't turn the engine. I'm thinking your solenoid or bendix spring is suspect and it's not disengaging the starter properly. If you can get access to a spare ign switch to try it might help as well.

It is alive!!!

I finally found the culprit - the ground terminal connector on the battey was corroded on the inside of the "shoe", not vissible unless you really looked it over closely...........sorry, you said it Dave, and I thought I had covered it allready!
I am really embarrassed to have missed it, but after borrowing a brand new starter and having the same result as before - ran when connected directly to the battery terminals, and not in car -, it had to be ground connections, even though they all seemed fine at first glance, and finally traced it to the one on the battery terminal itself...........filed the corrosion off from its inside, remounted it and starter turned the engine effordlessly. I guess since the VR is placed 2 inches from the engine to body ground cable, the starter decided to look for the missing ground else where, melting the 12v cable from the VR all the way to the back of the ign. switch.
Thanks for all your help, and guidance - I propably could not have done it without your brilliant advice, guys.
Thanks again.

Mopar greetings from Denmark

Rolf

Rolf,
Glad to be of help. These things can drive you crazy but if you keep plodding along and systematically check things, sooner or later you'll find it. The trick is to find the problem without throwing parts at it. So glad that things, once again, are good.

So true Dave - and I guess the word for it is Expierience!:happy7: At leats now I know what I will check first next time I encounter similar problems ( hopefully there wont be a next time...........!)
Thanks again.

Sure. When are you going to post some pictures on your profile? Love to check out your car.

Rolf, Thanks for posting the pictures. Great looking car and the fact that you drive it, evidenced by the baby seat, just warms my heart. Bet you don't pass many other 62-65 B bodies in Denmark! How'd you come to own this one?

Thanks Dave - it is in fact the only 62 in Denmark, and only a few 62-65´s in total( tons of Chargers, Challengers, Cudas, Coronets etc ). I used to own a 66 Belvedere with a beefed up 440, 727 manaual valve body etc, and eventhough it was fast, I just wanted something else - too boxy looking and was uncomfortable to drive in traffic because of the hard shifts. I visited Mopars by Moshers web site a few years ago, and instantly fell in love with the 62´s, and after searching through many different web sites for more than a year, I fanally tracked down this beauty in Chicago - guy needed money fast, so I sold my 66 and began the process of getting it home to Denmark. I was VERY excited to open the container for the first time 3 monhts later, and see it "live". I had seen tons of pictures, so I knew it was in good condition - but under the thick layer of dust it surpassed my expectations - it was immaculate -what a steal!
I actually drove it to the annual Mopar-meet that summer and won best in show and received many compliments. Many do not like the design on the 62-65´s, but to me, they are simply the icing on the cake!:love2:

Rolf,
Good for you. You're certainly amongst family here.
Take care,
Dave
