Camera on track

Section 20, page 39 of General Conditions of 2014 NHRA rulebook:

A couple of excerpts:

1) Cannot intentionally be directed at the racer in the other lane without NHRA permission

2) If mounted on car exterior must be secure metal attachment...no suction cups, hose clamps, wire ties, etc....no plastic or non-metal components permitted.

3) No mounting to helmet, handle bars or steering wheel allowed.

There's some more stuff dealing with video transmittal and data transmission.

Would those regulations pertain to a sanctioned event or a sanctioned track? We are racing for fun, so is it a safety issue or an issue with "spying"? I understand a safety issue, but I'm not stealing anyones secret setup.

I would think the rules apply at any NHRA member track regardless of the event.... as far as NHRA's reasoning is concerned, I doubt that most racers would want the guy in the other lane video taping them without permission.

The other excerpts I listed are definitely safety issues.....like camera falling off car because it's poorly mounted and having unnecessary equipment attached to helmet or steering equipment...

I don't think spying is a concern...

Incidently, I have a GoPro myself and hope to use it to see what the rear suspension is doing at launch..

Hope this helps..

inside the car mounting is no problem. under the car is illegal but if they dont see it, well
i mounted mine on the rollbar inside the car and to the dash with suction cups.

heres a go pro video attached to the roll bar.
it gives you a nice wide view

I don't have a rollbar, maybe I can have someone ride shotgun with it.

why not stick it on the rear quarter window on the inside? Doesn't the mount stand off far enough that you could put it at an angle to get both lanes in the picture? Other optins would be on the inside of the rear glass, on the inside of windshield...passenger side.

There's a big problem with that.......
you cant reach it to turn it on/off.

i understand NHRA;s rules, however last weekend there were several cars running the external mount GO PRO cameras. and the track officials did not seem to have a problem. this was div 7 wild horse pass( formally firebird international). so perhaps it is at the descresion of the officials. now mind you this was a test and tune night.

You can't stop once off the track and shut it off? Even if it recorded all the way back to the pit, you can't edit out what you don't want to keep?

Who's going to turn it on while your strapped in while your waiting in the staging lanes?
turning it off isn't really the problem, but battery life will be an issue.
you don't want to make videoing your main focus. Getting in the zone should be your main concern.

I have my go pro mounted on the back rollbar horizontal bar. I can turn it off/on by just reaching over.
enjoy the video.

I thought those things could record more than just a few minutes worth. Regardless, I think we have gotten completely away from the original post...whether there were rules against mounting a camera on the exterior of the race car. For those that get through mounted on the outside of the car, who turns on (and off) the camera(s) for you?

Atleast I'm keeping the thread going. Do you own a go pro or even know how one works? What's your real world experience with one?
my home track says no to outside go pro's. even on test n tunes.

Good morning, SUPERSTOCKRACER. You seem a bit curt. Maybe I posted something that offended you? :icon_scratch: I try to keep my posts neutral and non-offensive.

No, I do not own a go pro. I thought that was apparent since most of my posts were in the form of questions rather than comments. I would imagine it works similar to other cameras that record video? Sometimes asking the right questions helps others solve their own dilemmas. That was my intent. Glad to hear you have a mount on your roll bar that works for you. I'm guessing some of those interested in filming their drag runs are not running cars fast enough to require a roll bar. In those cases they are likely looking for alternative means to mount a camera. I provided a couple alternate places to mount the camera using the suction cup that would commonly be used. I thought sharing thoughts and ideas was a big reason we all come to this site.

Cheers. :eek:ccasion14:

So when you say let's get back on track, how do you expect someone to respond?
I have all the information needed on this topic, since I've used one right from the beginning.Maybe 4 years now, from the go pro hero to the hero black 3 with WiFi.
And as for the remark being curt, I don't think so. I guess you haven't seen any of my curt remarks before. I can be quite curt when someone want s to stir it up.

Good morning to you too.:hatwave:
