Can of rusty worms

Maybe more scotch tonight will help me work up the nerve!
Always works for me! All in all, starting to look much better. Amazing all the places rust can work it's way into. Guess mine was in better shape than I thought, only had to work the driver's side.

Well I'm glad I didn't leave it to continue rusting Miller, but i hate missing out on driving it this summer!

Welded the master cylinder backing plate upper stud plate in place.

time to punch out for the wiper pivot mounting plate. I was afraid I would forget to weld it back in lol.

Used my electrical knock out punch...had this kit for over 25 years and still works like new.

Looks great! After doing the fab/repair work on this part of the car the rest of the car will seem easy!

Cowl is about ready to put back on but I may get it blasted so I can prime it. Decided to tackle the inner fender today.
This Sherman piece is pretty rough and needs some dolly work to flatten out the ripples, etc.

IMG_3369.JPG

basically none of the holes line up...what a surprise!

IMG_3370.JPG

rough spot here, nothing is formed very well.

Getting ready to drill out the spot welds...not my favourite task!

looks like there was more rust than I thought. Probably a good idea to replace the whole inner after all.

A couple of hours of drilling and wella!
IMG_3386.JPG

More rust up front...yay!

IMG_3387.JPG

Some repair work to be done before welding on the new inner.

IMG_3388.JPG

Trying the fit after some dolly work and paint stripping.

Glenwood, nothing like non fitting aftermarket replacement panels. To bad there wasn't someone in your area that had a 64 parts car with decent inner fenders.
The factory panel, even when removed from a donor car, will fit, so much better then a re-pop panel.
By now, you aught to be very good at drilling out tack welds, a pro....lol. You probably dream about it while sleeping....

The project is looking good, keep the progress updates coming.

Boy that area where the front of the inner fenders meet the core support looks all too familiar...I just fixed those areas on my car last week.

yeah it's brutal drilling all these welds out. The cheap bits don't last too long, even with lots of cutting oil. I was planning on doing some more work on it tonight, then my 18 year old wiped her car out into a tree! Lucky she's ok but the car...not so much. Spent all evening tearing it apart to survey the damage. Going to be fun trying to fix this one! More beer required! lol

Lots of holes to drill just to fill back in with molten metal!

IMG_3391.JPG

This access hole doesn't quite match the original.

IMG_3392.JPG

A little cutting and bending and dolly work gets it a little closer.

Bending this lip to match the original. Lots of trimming and minor adjustments to make this match the original.

IMG_3395.JPG

Weld thru primer and a little POR15 above the shock tower.

IMG_3396.JPG

Ready to weld.

IMG_3397.JPG

Had to use some black pipe to clamp down the top of the shock tower. I figured I should weld that first because it would be tough to force down later. Triple checked the fit and measurements...

Checking the gauge of the shock tower. I'm guessing but I thought I should set the welder to the thicker metal in order to penetrate properly.

IMG_3400.JPG

Looks to be close to 12ga.

IMG_3401.JPG

5-G it is!

That is some nice work, you deserve a few cold ones. I had to replace my inner fenders as well because mine were cut out for wheel well dump headers. First part of my car I worked on. Keep up the good work.

Thanks threewood. Its as close as I can get it with my limited experience and tools. I'm pretty happy with the results.
I may take the other one off today...after some coffee, lots of coffee. I'm not really a fan of drilling out spot welds.
