hey everyone. just a quick question.
i have a 1971 dodge charger with a 1978 360 in it. When i drive the car now and step on the gas hard the car tends to start dying out. anyone have any idea why this would happen. the last thing i did to the motor was change out the old distributer and coil for a new HEI one wire distributor. Would that cause it? it idles fine no problem there.
thanks guys

Sounds more fuel related to me. Could be fuel pump weak or bad. Maybe a restriction somewhere. Filter. Carb.

I'm pretty sure it has a holley on it. ill double check tomorrow and get back to you… thanks for the help so far tho

Accelerator pump in the carburetor could be on it's way out, or the fuel pump itself could be fading. Is it only when you first give it the gas, or does it bog down and never catch up?

its only when i give it gas. the fuel pump is a electric fuel pump that someone put in before i own the car. it happens like when i jump on the gas real quick

With the engine shut off pull off the aircleaner and give the throttle a quick pump while watching in the carb and see if you are getting a good stream of gas from the accelerator pump.

the only time it backed fired was when the timing was off but not anymore after i adjusted the timing. and ill check the pump tomorrow thanks for all the help guys

What happens when you're cruising, then nail it and hold it to the floor without letting up?

Yaa well when I give it gas it starts to die out so I lift my foot and it catches up. Idk what it will do if I hold it to the floor and don't let up I gotta try it I haven't tried that yet. In the mean time im going to take the air cleaner off and check the accelerator pump for the carb until I have a chance to drive it

Put in a new accelerator pump and stop using the ethanol gas would be the first order of business for me

Roger that! Thank you for clarifying...
Generally speaking, if it just hesitates a moment and then starts to take off, it usually means the accelerator pump in the carburetor needs to be "adjusted" to output a larger shot of gas, or the accelerator pump itself is in need of a rebuild.
If it starts bogging down over the long haul, then it usually means the fuel bowls are drying up under heavy load. In other words the fuel pump cannot keep pace with the fuel demand.

Okay thanks for all the help guys. Imma check that accelator pump later when I get home from work. It's going to be at least another week before I can get it out of the garage and drive it but I'll keep you guys posted

hey guys. alright i checked it out last night. i didn't start it up or anything because the batteries were dead of course. but the carb is a holley 4 barrel double pumper i believe I'm going to get the model number off it later. even tho the car was turned off and the pump not running i gave it full throttle and i could see it was getting a good stream of gas. but i could only see front side of the carb. i couldn't get a good view of the back. when i get it out to drive it ill let you guys know.

In that case, it probably just needs an adjustment. You can refer to the Holley Tech link posted above for more info on that.
