Depends what carb make. Carter parts are pretty much impossible to find rods and jets for, particularly the 3 step factory ones. The Edelbrock versions are a 2 step and rods and jets are available through Jegs or Summit or your local speed shop.

I've used the Eddy metering rod kits or old Carter strip kits (purchased at swap meets over the years for cheap) on the older AFB's with good results. The Eddy rods are different than the OEM in that some have a taper between steps rather than a step as the old Carter parts but they seem to work OK. All Eddy carbs are two step (as most OEM AFB's are) so you should be fine there. MarkB good call on the Q-Jet parts site!

I have also machined the rods to get what I wanted based on the A/F meter readings. I made a mini split collar that runs very true in my lathe to hold the rods.

If you have an original Carter AVS, you can use any old Carter AFB or Eddy jets and metering rods. They work. Use them on the strip all the time. Carter AFB stuff can use Eddy stuff. Very common parts out there

Meep-Meep he's your guy, I see him help a ton of folks with their Edelbrock & Carter carb issues !! IIRC he had a place or he was talking to someone in another thread too, about metering rods &where to get them etc.
I don't remember the name now, could be Steve's or maybe Tony's Parts too had some "New Old Stock" Carter 3 step metering rod kits, the new Edelbrock/Weber copies use a 2 step metering rod IIRC...
But they will work in a AFB...
what carb, AVS or AFB or Thermoquad ??

If you change from three step to two step of visa verse you also have to use the corresponding caps.

The TQ rods are 3/4 of an inch shorter.

You seem to be up to speed on Carter carbs. I'm looking for a source that will provide various specs for the AVS 4682s; particularly the stock part numbers for the jets and metering (step) rods. It's my understanding there is a range for the jets and rods depending on the cam, is this correct?

The AVS used three step rods, which require tall jets. I'd just go with the Edelbrock jet kits (formerly Carter Strip Kits).
