So we have went in and redone all the gaskets on my 318 la from a 73 satellite. Well it wasn't firing stock wise so we flipped everything around and it starts off the 1st cyl instead of the 6th. But there is a problem everytime you press the gas it stalls or when you put the car into gear it stalls out. My cuz is a ford guy but he believes it is a bad carb cause its almost 40 years old but im wondering if there is anything I could do to make it run. so can I get some help?

What do you mean by "starts off the 1st cyl instead of the 6th"? It doesn't start off any particular cylinder, just whatever happens to be next in the firing order when you crank it. Is it running smoothly and firing all cylinders when idling, before putting it in gear?

If you're thinking something is wrong with the carb, you can artificially richen it with a spray of carb cleaner when you put it in gear to see if you can keep it running that way.

After reading your post I would start with making sure everything is set correctly first. I am not sure what you are saying about flipping everything around and starting on a particular cylinder. Make sure the distributor is in correctly and the plug wires are in the proper sequence.

How does the engine react when idling and then running up the RPM by opening the throttle? Generally, when a car stalls when put in gear, it's usually incorrect idle speed. Most of the time, 750 rpm in park down to 550 in drive or reverse. Go back to basics, check the timing, then the idle rpm in park or neutral. Have someone put it gear with the left foot on the brake, see what the idle drops to. You may have a vacuum leak as well. Make sure you have the plug wires in the correct order, I once reversed number 4 and 6 once and it idled but under power it was just horrible.

It is at the correct 950 rpm when idling, and there are no vacuum leaks. But when its idling and you open the throttle its stumbles a bit and then rises in rpms. I was told that it most likely is a bad carb cause everything has checked out fine so I guess I just need a new one.

could be bad accelerator pump in carb.with eng off and air cleaner off look down inside carb barrels.(choke plate open)and move the throttle to wide open.you want a streem of gas to shoot into the barrel pretty smoothly.if it is sporatic or nothing at all carb needs rebuilt.
