What all is needed to change out an open to a sure grip?is it a big deal if gears are going to be swapped at same time?thanks for the help

If you're about to do a gear change, slam in a SureGrip carrier and ditch the non SG carrier....the carrier is what the ring gear is 'carried' on and contains the guts that make it a SG or not. Just make sure it has the center thrust pin in it if it's a clutch type.

All you need is the correct carrier of your choice. If you're changing gears also, I would highly recommend calling Randy's Ring and Pinion and getting a good install kit with bearings and all.

Cranky could the center thrust pin be also known as the "buttons"?........................MO

Yes they could.

What gear ratio are you lookin for? I may have enough around here to put something together for you. They ain't cheap to ship. Cheapest way I've found is to tape um up in a plastic 5 gallon bucket.

I've got a 3.23 Sure Grip in the trunk of my road runner right now waiting to swap in place of the 2.73 open rear diff I have in there right now. I'll let you know if I hit any snag in particular, but it should be a blast! Lol

Thinking 3.55 or 3.73 I do a little hiway driving so i am not sure i want to go any steeper.was thinking about just buying the sure grip carrier itself and having my transmission guy swap out the open and put new gears in then.car has a 489 case in it and I have a spare 742 case.thanks,David.

Very cool. Let me know how it works out for you. I got the 3.23 instead of I think it was a 3.91 or something because I'm anticipating a 10 hour highway drive to Michigan before long.

when you change the ring and pinion, start with the shim under the pinion bearing of the original gears to get the proper pinion depth on the new gears. it will be a good starting point.
