If you are using 6 pack rods and need a balancer for the correct weight and look, there's no need to spend big money.

Simply get a 400 external balancer and turn the weight's face down to the thickness of the 440-6 balancer. Everything else is the same. You can do it on a lathe or mill and a rotary table.

When we do this, I have a "master balancer" that I balance the crank with, then, once the crank is balanced I install the modified balancer and correct it back to zero. Now it's sized and balanced just like an OEM.

If you are going to balance the assembly (highly recommended) you really don't need to worry if it is dead on to factory balance though, as long as that balancer stays with the crank. Just machine the weight down and get the rotating assembly done.

I will post the correct thickness if the OE balancer's weight if anyone needs it.

I often wondered about this and couldn't think of a reason to not do what you said. Just make sure the offset weight is the same mass at the same radius. I have a 30 lb balancing machine that I actually have to calibrate, so I can actually tell you how many grams at a particular radius would be required. Very good info!

The offset distance on the weight is exactly the same as well as the vectored amount of the weight. The thickness is the only difference.
