Cool keychains. Post yours here

Send a PM and I will send you a list of the serial numbers – sometimes random numbers have meaning like a VIN, birthday, address, etc.
But we're not thinking of selling items in a General Discussion thread are we???? :poke:

I figured it would be kind of a grey area here but I made sure not to post any prices. People can reserve a serial number then "pick up" at Carlisle...

Mama bought this for me for my shop key.
She’s not trying to tell me something, is she?

This is the second of this style of key holder I have found. I ground off the end of the key to make it fit. And then I had to drill a hole in the key. So it makes me wonder, when people got them were they given a headless blank key with a small hole in it that would have been cut by the locksmith ? Also, if you were using it as a keychain, how would you then use it? If you lost your keys or locked them in your car, what good is a spare key going to do for you?

I found these keychains that are meant to allow you to fold your key into. The one from the bar is the first time I realized that if you drill a hole into the head of the key, the whole key will then fit into the holder. I have added some vintage keychain items. Both of them must be from the early 60s or late 50s, I’m guessing, because they both have six digit telephone numbers on them.

I have NO idea what any of my current license plate numbers are.... but I remember what my parents cars were, from the 50s(!) cause of those little license plate key fobs. I have no idea where they came from. (Insurance company?).

I remember the plate number on my BMW 30? years ago. Every time I am asked for a plate number (hotel check-in, etc) I give them that one. Nobody has ever batted an eye, sold the car 28? years ago. It's a legit tag number registered to a legit car I owned. :poke:

My parent's had those too. I believe you're right about being from the insurance company.

I thought they got them with their tag stickers or maybe their new tags when the DMV changed them. I remember them being in a brown envelope.

I walked into an insurance agent's office to get car insurance when I moved to Seattle and the agent asked me for the title. I looked at her and said why? I need your VIN she replied. I rattled it off at her without blinking an eye. She just stared at me for a long time. What's wrong I asked. She says "I've been selling insurance for 18 years and no one has ever done that before".

I laughed. My wife laughed.

They came from the DAV. If you lost your keys, and the finder dropped them in a post box, they would be returned to you. In some agreement between USPS, the DAV, and the DMV they worked to return them by using the license plate number, which was your actual number. My year is exceptionally rare, because the DAV stopped mass mailings. Because of that, I made my own by shrinking a scan of my 1968 Michigan plate. The nice thing is I have two mini DAV plates that match the plate on my car

Impressive., but not sure why.
Have you also memorized the phonebook of years past?

I just realized taking these pictures that I am mistaken about how lost keys were returned. I was always under the impression that they would get the keys back to you by using the license plate number. But that is probably privileged information that the DMV wouldn’t give out. I just noticed there are serial numbers on the back. The DAV must have kept a list of those serial numbers.

Those license plate keychains were mailed out by some charity organization (disabled veterans?). The info should be listed on back.

They would send them to owners looking for donations for the organization.

Here is one that I picked up from the Mopar dealer in Germany. The owner Oliver is a huge Mopar guy, the biggest in Germany. He had these made and are pretty cool.
