I tried searching the forums as I'm sure this has been discussed but couldn't find anything except over heating questions. I have the restoration book but I can't determine what is the correct setup for the fan on this car. Maybe I have the wrong water pump pulley or clutch but there is no way I'm fitting a a clutch, a 1 1/4" spacer and a fan between the water pump and the radiator. Any help is appreciated.

i believe the spacer is behind the pulley"within the pulley". i believe that allows it to line up with the grrove on the crank pulley.

joey d

If it has a clutch fan, I don't believe it uses a spacer, they just have different length clutches. With a derect drive fan it would use a spacer

It doesn't say anything in the book about a clutch fan but I had seen it on a few forums. I believe the spacing would be right if I just used the spacer and a straight fan. Maybe people are using the clutch fan just to help cooling. Thanks all

You get way better cooling without the clutch,it doesn't slip under load. Clutch fan was used to save power not cool better. I have always used the 224 fan, it's 7 blade 18" solid drive fan on anything with a cooling issue. From the factory it could have come either way I believe

Let me ask you this. In the book it calls for a 1.24" spacer. I checked classic inidustries and a few other places and no one offers that size. I can find 1", 1 1/2" and others. Do you know any place that sells the 1.24 or is it common to just run a 1" in it's place?

I might have a used one ,let me check and get back to you. Might be a couple of days,we are getting a snow storm right now. lol:(

that would be great. I need quite a few parts, lol. Looking for quarter glass regulators for the last two hours. Some thing are easy to get for this car, others are like chasing ghosts.

you should not be using a spacer with a clutch fan. It will put stress on the clutch fan and it may throw the balance of the clutch fan off. Spacers should only be used with a solid fan. That being said I'm sure some people will still try and use a spacer with a clutch fan. Using a clutch fan will save you some horsepower because it does not spin all the time, only when it is needed

Per the '69 service manual a thermal control clutch fan was only used on the 318, 340, 383 & 440 with a 2.93 or higher rear end.

There is also a "torque control" (fluid drive) fan, but it does not say where it was used. I suspect it was "high capacity" cooling systems.

The others (most Road Runners, mine incl) got a standard belt driven fan.
The standard lists a 1.24" spacer.
It calls for a 3/4" - 1 1/4" space between the fan & the radiator.
The standard fan is listed as 18" dia., 7 blade with a 2" width.

Let's start here....

What is the application as the set up varies.
If it's direct dive, I'm assuming it came with the standard 22" radiator. Is that correct?
Did the car come with an axle package? (3:55 or 3:91 gears)
A/C?

BTW... if the restoration book you have is the one written by Herd, it is full of errors and incomplete info. DO NOT use it as your sole source. Verify everything you read in it with other sources.

Sorry, I assume everyone knows what I'm doing, lol. It's a 22 inch radiator. The gears are 320 something. Its not an ac car. The restore book I have is from Herd. Is there another book? I have looked around and couldn't find anything else. Someone posted there will be a 69 only version on Amazon in April. One last question, I keep reading that is a spacer. Is the spacer behind the pulley? Right now when I put a fan on I'm going to be very close to the radiator.
