1.5in fan clutch to radiator spacing, too far?

That loop hose is crimped over - you need to have water flow on the heater connections.
The cooling system is designed to purge air out off the engine through the heater unit.

The thermal clutches were used on cars with a/c, and nonthermal on cars with out. For 70 Plys the fan is to be 3/4 to 1 1/4 from the radiator, and there are no spacers used with a clutch. From your pics everything looks correct. Fan clutch my be all you need.

The Hayden 2747 clutch arrived and is installed. Temps stay on the second mark near the cool side of the gauge.
Fan spins a lot faster at idle and stops immediately when it's shut off.
I think the old clutch was just too loose to work well at idle anymore.

Thanks to all who responded.

Didn't know that about the design, I moved so the kink would left water flow though. This is temporary.

Heater control valve connected now. Went for a 50 mile highway run. Temps stay cool from stationary up through sustained highway speeds. I think we're good to go now.

It doesn't matter.....the thermostat by pass is a CORED HOLE, in the water pump housing, DIRECTLY BELOW the thermostat. The heater hose connections can be used or plugged or looped. When the tstat is closed, coolant is re-circulated thru this cored hole OR the heater connections if used.
