Is anybody running or has run a D.U.I street/strip distributor? I'd like to hear how they work compared to the fbo modified mp performance units, I've got it narrowed down to those choices.
Thanks

I recently picked up a 74 Charger with a 400 that has one of these installed. I have one issue but mine may not relate to what your looking at because it does not have the vacuum advance. The issue I am have is that the car stumbles at lower speeds, and often stalls when slowing or stopping. Because of mismatched parts, I don't feel I can give you an accurate opinion if it's distributor or not. My car has Edelbrock E-Street aluminum heads and an Edelbrock 600 cfm carb with electric choke, both designed for idle-5500 rpm. However, it has also an Edelbrock aluminum intake designed for 1500-6500 rpms. I just ordered a new intake to match carb and heads so I will set the timing and adjust carb after I get that installed. I will say I don't get any spark knock or misfires so I'm guessing the street/strip distributor is fairly solid. Hopefully I can give you a better answer in a week or two.

I have one in my Dodge stock car...other than the size issue, it is awsome...lots of spark...I ran it in an electric drill when i got it with the wires/plugs etc. I couldn't believe the spark just turning it with a drill...the plugs really snapped when they sparked even at that low rpm...very happy with it

sounds good, does it do away with the voltage regulator and resistor? the one I'm looking at is the street strip one. as far as clearance does it touch the valve cover, I have the old school finned m/t's and I wont part with them. The main reason I want to upgrade from the mp electronic is the voltage regulator and ecu boxes going out, back in the day I was always replacing voltage regulators, and I did notice the timing on the mp distributors wasn't consistant

You'll keep the regulator, but the ECU and ballast resistor go away. I run HEI (not a Davis) in my car and wouldn't change it back. Nothing at all wrong w Mopar's electronic ignition, I have a couple of those too, but my low compession 360 really likes the hotter spark and larger plug gaps.

Couldn't comment on big block clearance issues, but I know people have had issues with non-HEI type distributors and a small amount of grinding in non critical area(s) takes care of it. Yer valve covers should be fine.

I bought a DUI distributor for my 451 (stroked 400) build but the motor's not ready yet. I've heard from several members on here that they're VERY satisfied with the DUI unit. I'm also excited to get rid of the ECU and ballast, but hoping I don't fight the valve cover clearance too much.

it does sound like an awesome unit, I think it would keep the engine from loading up from a long duration cam at idle with all that juice. it's 369.00 at summit

I forgot to mention that along with the ECU and ballast resistor, you can send that oil-filled canister coil packin' too.

The HEI setup tends to piss off Mopar purists, I'm surprised none of them have chimed in on this thread. Perhaps the haters have mellowed?

most of the performance add ons aren't factory anyways, aluminum heads, roller rockers, cams with chevy lobes, after market high compression pistons, etc. nothing wrong with being a purist, but my car isnt numbers matching or a concourse points car so I'm going to take advantage of the latest and greatest, sometimes you have to give the devil his dues
