Yes, I believe that I did ask that question in my Roach thread. I was told that it was some sort of impact protection thing just on 1970's to keep the gas tank from sliding over to the right side frame rail. I guess if it wasn't there & the tank moved upon impact, the filler tube could pop out and spill gas?

Well, it is removable. I'll look in my parts book and see if I can find it.

I looked in the service manual and did not see it.

The 1970 was the only year of the 68-70s that had that emission evaporative tube and 5 vacuum lines. I'm wondering if it is also there to protect that. I'd have to look closer at the car to refresh my memory.

What is this funky bracket on the passenger side; behind the rear axle and somewhat adjacent to the gas tank?

It looks like I removed that bracket in the red car. See finger pointing to the mounting holes:

Here is the evap lines from the gas tank to the weird trunk tube.

From the top corner of the tank….

Through the RR frame rail, hugging the floor then…

….attaching to hose nipples to vent up through this:

It is like a weird snorkel or something. I could remove it but I obey the law.

That bracket on the framerail was put on 1970 Chargers to prevent the tank from becoming disconnected from the filler tube in the event of a rear end collision. I believe AMD sells the bracket. Every second generation Charger should have one.
