Everything on my '71 Charger SE has been good or best, and I haven't found one issue with anything yet, nor do I expect to. Anyways, I pulled the rear diff apart, and all looks great!
No rust, and well covered in oil. I found a very little metal shaves, but see nothing ground in the gears, no gears missing, no teeth missing or metal stress.

I was thinking I could:
1) Clean it all up. Do I need to remove all the oil from the housing and gears?
2) Drill a hole and tap it for a better drain hole?
3) Add a gasket or sealer and close it up.
4) Add 85W-140 non-synthetic oil (2 qts and a little more).
5) Insert axles that already have new racers and have been rebuilt (any special steps here)?

Anything I am missing?

I always run rags completely thru the housing and clean all the old lube
out entirely on everything. Especially, if there are any metal chips or debris whatsoever.

missing something ,, yes ,, from the looks of the 50 year oil i would rebearing that unit and add a sure grip unit ,, scrub the hell out of your housing ,, and is that just the old grease on the top of the ring gear teeth or chipped teeth. if you think its look that good and feel lucky clean it all up and run it but doing it twice is not fun.
