Does anyone know what the correct length is for a dipstick? 440 Max Wedge with 7 quart oil pan.

IMHO the length does not change. The oil top level needs to be the same distance from the counterweights. The shape and depth of the pan dictates how much oil it holds. Always use a baffled pan and/or a windage tray. Or both.

440 Max Wedge?????

I ran into this same conundrum building my 493 physically it didn't make sense that a deeper pan would use the factory stick(seemed like it would be too short). So I switched to a billet stick which made it seem even more off because it was the same length. but bottom line is the 7 qt level will be at the right height in the pan so any factory length stick will read right. P.s. the billet stick tube on mine is bent out more than the stock one so a 1/4" less on my level is correct.

To double check, drain pan and reinstall 7 qts and check or correct the dipstick mark. That's what I did when I installed a Lokar set up.:blob1:

the dipstick should still be the same, "unless the windage-tray is lower into the pan", like usually assoc. with a 4.25"-4.5" stroker, mostly in a RB hi-deck block the B/Low deck has a smaller diameter crankshaft counter weights, but it really depend on the type of windage-tray & oil pan type, who's is it, what style it is, a Funny-car type rectangular pan or open frame-rail type pan or pan with a steering tube going thru could change capacity & oil depth in the pan... Than effecting what level the oil is in the pan, you don't want the crank hitting the oil in the pan "EVER", otherwise that's the highest point you want the oil in the pan, just under the windage-tray... make sure the oil capacity isn't including the filter too, some are actually 6 quart "oil-pan" with a 7th quart actually in the filter, marketed as a 7 quart system, like some of the cheaper ones... my Milodon 7"/7 qt. pan uses the same OEM dipstick length... I actually measured it where the windage-tray was in relation to the pan depth, with the pan off & than filled the pan to that level on he bench & checked how many qt.'s it "actually" was to that level.... I hope that didn't just confuse everyone...

Thanks for your help

A little off the question, but how do you get the dipstick tube seated all the way into the block.. Mine will start, but I can't get it fully seated....................................MO

Below is a good graphic of a Dipstick.
Let me know if it helps.

The dip tube installation...... I run a brass pipe over the tube with vice grips and with a little gasket sealer on the tube just below the rib tap the grips lightly on the grips in till it seats clean the hole with sand paper and brake cleaner and don't forget to clearance the oil pan gasket or the stick oil want to hit.

I resemble that remark... that stately looking dude

LMFAO.
I was thinking you would stay quiet....most people on here wouldn't have known had you not piped up.

I just noticed the matching Raider towel set. Classic.

How long have you been waiting for a dipstick thread to use that pic Runner lol.

I had a 402 pan 4 qts + filter and my stick read prefect, I recently replaced my pan with a 6 qts + filter hemi repop. when my pan was off I put a straight edge across my block and it was exactly 1.5 inches down to the full mark.
Installed new pan and reinstalled windage tray filled with 7 qts and was perfect on the dipstick like before on my stock stroke 440.

Since 1/25/2013, 4:25 PM actually. Not a Dipstick thread per se, just one that felt right.
