Here's what I got guys. 70 Roadrunner, 440 4 speed. Pretty stock engine. 26" radiator, 190 stat, mechanical fan with 6 blades, Mopar water pump. Runs right at 190 when going down the road as expected. As soon as I stop it heats up and will keep going an going up. I start moving it cools back down again. I'm thinking the fan setup ain't so hot. Pun intended. I do think the radiator and water pump are good however since it does cool back down when moving.

I've bought the recommended 180 Stant thermostat and the Hayden 2675 clutch fan that's I've seen in the sticky's about this topic. I'll also replace the bottom hose, as it seems squishy but I don't 'think' it's being sucked closed when revving a little higher. Besides this thing heats up at idle at a stop, not when rollin.

The question I have is about the fan shroud. Does this look right? It's really biased to the passenger side. Also the fan is sticking almost out of the shroud, and is over 2.5" from the back of the radiator. These things can't be helping my situation. I'm hoping the new clutch fan will bring it closer to the back of the radiator.

A little help from the experts here please. And pics if you can provide them what it's 'supposed' to look like when it's a stock setup would be great. I can't find anything on the net at this point for a reference.

The fan needs to be closer to radiator, blades should be no more than "half" in the shroud.

Had the same problem 69 383. Put a 180 in it helped a lot.

I had a 18" flex fan with a 20" opening mopar shroud and it was close. You may be fighting a losing battle on the overheat if the radiator is full of crud, those stock radiators only had 3 rows of 1/2" tubes which are tiny compared to today's aluminum.

As far as the offset yes that is correct remember a 440 is offset in the engine bay to the passenger side so it would make sense the shroud and fan look offset as well.

My set up now.

and in case you need proof electric fans pull air through :)

Here is a pic of my 70 gtx 440+6 4 speed with 26 inch radiator, fan is an 18 inch 7 blade clutch, shroud has 20 inch opening, blades are half in half out.
This is all stock and original and has never overheated in the 35 years I've owned it, I can let it idle for ever in extreme heat with no rise in temp.
My radiator is offset the same as the engine, fan is dead center.
BTW I run a 195 degree tstat.

Cam, timing and other factors can cause heat problems also.

I had this exact same issue after going through my entire cooling system and it led back to a faulty thermostat. It was a brand new one. Buy the best quality thermostat that is high flow that you can.

I had a post about it in the 66/67 charger forum. Take the thermostat out and see if the same thing happens. If it doesnt then there is your issue.

Not sure of the cam, but it seems relatively stock. I've never had the engine apart.

Timing is 14 initial, 36 total. It does have a Weiand aluminum intake on it, and I have the heat shield under the Holley 750 carb. It also has manifolds on it for exhaust. Again, its pretty stock. Just from the look of your pic, it seems like I have a small(er) sized fan for the large shroud opening, and it's definitely not close enough to the radiator to pull enough air through it.

OK start supplying some info on your radiator and fan setup please. Just in case.

A buddy of mine bought a dual fan electric from Rock Auto to fit his radiator, it was like $100 and from a Ford Contour. It's on his 67 Chevelle with over 600hp and works like a champ. Anyone out there do something similar with a stock 26" radiator? Just curious. He saved a good bit of money just from researching the fan measurements and cfm ratings.

Radiator is 2998956, and shroud is 2998326, I don't have a number for the fan though.
I know the shroud is available as a reproduction and I think the fan is also available.
I also run stock exhaust manifolds.
Many have used electric fans with good results also.

I hear both good and bad on pusher fans. Seems like people prefer puller fans more often than not.

I'm going to set it up as close to factory as possible, of course that's what's mostly recommended on here anyway. It's only going to cost me about $50 total if I do it right.

If I'm still SOL at that point, then I'll prob go with a full boar dual electric fan setup.

There is a lot to be said of the factory setup, I mean how else could they justify a motor that would overheat in summer? I think timing and a original 3 row with the correct mix of antifreeze Glycol a good functional pump, clutch fan and a well fitting shroud on an ALL stock motor is plenty fine and should work flawlessly. Otherwise dealers would be having a **** with car returns lol.

Those of us that have strokers, modded motors etc don't have much of a choice and should use modern tech to get it running cool. If you're all original and stock then just re-core your original radiator and make sure you have a new pump and your timing is right and you will be fine.

Started pulling it apart today. The shroud is a stock piece. The fan is an 18" 6 blade with no provision to mount it to a clutch, so I'd have to get a proper fan to work with the clutch. Any recommendations on that? I bought the Hayden 2765 clutch and a 180 Stant thermostat already. If I have to start replacing pulleys and all, I might just go the electric fan route since the $ is about the same.

Anyone have an electric fan on a stock 26" radiator???
