I'm a little concerned about my Magnum. I feel he is too skinny.
He is a two and a half/three year old deaf Gsd (girlfriend knows exactly how old). He is currently eating 50% more wet food (several different brands, but primarily pedigree) than my other two Gsd's, that are roughly 100 lbs, and he is 70-75 lbs, and I can feel every rib.
Gf says there's nothing in his stool to indicate worms, and all three have 24/7 access to quality dry food.
Magnum is definitely more ball driven than Hemi and Cuda, and he gets more exercise than the other two, but not THAT much more.
Am I right to worry? I'd like him to be about 85 lbs

Faster metabolism probably
different dog like different people process food differently

is he a Dutch or Belgium (or partial) breed of shepherd ?
they tend to be thin (thinner/leaner)

Purebred American version German Shepherd. Half brother to the other two. Hemi and Cuda are our dogs. Magnum is MINE!
(A close friend adopted the Malinois we had for a while, and she is well trained and smart... but frankly........pudgy, lol)
Pics are Magnum, and Sheela, when we had her.

Don't forget dogs are like us. Not everyone has the perfect physique or physiology. Regardless of what Vets say when they try to fat shame your buddies.
Here is a shot of today's evening grub. One patty or Darwins[ raw, frozen] for Toga[ 70lbs], two for Zeke[ 140lbs]. Topped off with steamed Broccoli to give them bulk, so they feel full, but cut down on calories as the Fromms dry with the Darwins is calorie dense.

This is not shocking news to us. We got rid of this gamble many years ago when it would not pay for "covered" items after they neglected to tell you once you hit the limit, you were done. When they did pay, it was a small fraction but only after my wife went round and round with them. When I found out Nationwide was the carrier, that explained a lot. They were piss poor for covering vehicles and didn't live up to their slogan. Nationwide is not on your side. Now this.
Pet owners left scrambling after Nationwide axes insurance for 100,000 policyholders: 'You freak out'

They certainly do eat very well
props for taking the extra time

my dog Elvis love veggies, fruits, potatoes, rice, any meat
cottage cheese, sour cream & especially apples too
hell if I eat it, he'll eat it

I 'free feed' him, put appr. 3 cups of dry food in his bowl
(a medium sized cottage cheese container worth)
Purina Pro-Plan Performance, chicken & rice
(all my labs have eaten it, all have lived 14+ to 17 years)
he doesn't eat a lot at any one time, he nibbles hear or there
he rarely eats the whole amount
I probably add to it every 3rd day-ish give or take
depending on what my dad puts over it when he eats breakfast
(my dad's the real problem, lots of bread)
except when we eat, he licks the plates, get a few treats, bites meats
& pasta rice or potatoes usually
& he can eat people food forever, if we allowed it but;
I limit it as much as possible...

He also get a Milk Bone dog biscuit 'small', every time he goes outside
& come in on the 1st call, or doesn't get one...
He knows it too...
He also gets 2 Milk Bones assorted flavor every morning for breakfast...
right after I fill his water bowl, he's good on his routine...

at 9:00pm-ish he gets 1 Pup-Peroni treat 'every night', like clock work
I sware he know exactly what time it is too
(what I used to train him when a pup, done all my labs that way)

he also gets Pedigree Dental Stix's every Mon. Wed. Fri. around mid day
he has very nice white clean teeth too
He's also not a farter at all, like many peoples dogs all are
their dogs are fart-ers big time, none of mine have been really
It's good food, in proper proportions, is what I suspect so...

No corn additives, mostly not much grain either (except barely or rice)
others are not good for dogs

as you can tell he's not fat, he's lean & muscular for a lab
March 2022 Elvis 6 yo (1.JPG

Elvis he's 105# he's pretty tall 'for a pure' 15th generation (?)
AKC, American Kennel Club
A Golden eye Tudor/Chocolate, he's a 'water lab', yes there are differences
(longer legged, thinner build than a shorter 'field dog' or like stocky sawed off English Labs)
his decedents are directly from Labrador, Newfoundland org.

Dog Labs American vs English.jpg

my vet, she wanted him down to maybe 95#s,
she said 'If I wish'
after he had his lil' toes surgery

he's not fat & he's not going on a diet
until he needs to

Sometimes you wonder about Vet's. Good chance the "best food" choice is what they're peddling which is most likely Science Diet. Unfortunately, SD is one of the companies that got hit with the Chinese ingredients and haven't improved much. If you get a chance, watch "Pet Fooled' on Youtube. Great documentary about the pet food industry. The two Vet's in the vid are really up on their game. It's how we found out about Darwins. They don't mention it but you see that its what they feed their brood.
My wife gives both of them a Nubz each in the morning. We do have Buddy Biscuits to give occasionally. We'll baste a few of those in drippings sometimes. They LOVE those.

Dan the Man, yellow lab The Duke's (black lab) Pup back in 1996-97
going after a ball
when I still lived in Concord & had a big ol' house garage & pool

sorry it's blury,
digital photo of a Polaroid inside a frame/glass
time stamp is way off too

The Duke
Budnicks Dog Duke.JPG

dad & his boy, typical lab,
Duke ball in mouth
he used to dive down the bottom 8' in the deep end of the pool
to get them
Dan never could do it, his butt would float up like a bobber
he never stopped trying
I wish I had better photos
I miss them both too

Been a while since I looked at this thread. We had to say goodbye to our wonderful family member back in October 2022. Sasha was our German Shepherd, or should I say we were her family lol. Anyways she was part of our family for 13 years and I still miss her every single day. Been thinking of getting another one to try and fill the void. House is just not the same without a dog. She was an awesome dog and got along with all other animals and people. Used to let her out the door as soon as the FedEx guy pulled up, she’d run out and hop in his truck and get a treat. Then walk back to the house. Did the same for the ups man.

All of them leave special memories!

R/T, do it! Get yourself and your family another dog. There are so many wonderful deserving dogs in the shelters.
But probably all of us here know how you feel. My gf and I lost our black shepherd to cancer a few months ago, at 6 1/2. I don't know how I would have done, without the three gsd's we still have. I still miss Mopar every day.
