DOGS

I want to play!

IMG_3524.JPG

My catahoula nearly killed himself playing "stick." The stick would land in a cedar, and he learned to jump up and pull the stick out of the limbs. Problem is that cedars usually have broken old branches at the bottom. My boy came down on one and ripped his stomach open. He only lived because it happened early in the morning and I got to the vet just as the vet opened.

My Shepherd goes after sticks so crazy that I don't let kids or idiots throw sticks for him. He could catch a longer stick in the chest with the other end jammed into the ground pretty easy.

He has gotten open wounds above an eye twice and a big groove down his ribs from equipment and a truck bumper going after rabbits. Frank has never crashed into anything, he hunts, and the Shepherd chases. Two times when we came out of the house, Captain went full throttle right for a rabbit that had a 25-40 yard head start. Frank just watches for a second and runs low and smooth a different direction and he had the rabbit come racing through cars or equipment right into his lap.

Captain is in it for the chase, Frank is all business. If you're flooding out gophers, you want Frank on point. The Shepherd will pin a gopher down 10 times with a foot and let it go until it reaches cover and escapes. Captain is excellent for running deer out of the yard. He runs them full speed and stops as soon as they are in the field or trees.

They were both 2 when I got them and get along incredibly well.

Note his scar... It went away when he got his winter coat. I thought it was going to be permanent, as he had a big wad of skin and hair at the end of the groove initially.

My Shepherd has a cat that follows him everywhere. Feral Floyd was just footprints in the snow last winter. I started putting out food on a plant stand on the porch and after about 6 weeks I started seeing this orange cat. He was 3/4 grown and completely wild. He made friends with the dogs several months before he got close to me.

Captain and Floyd have WWE throwdowns that are hilarious. The cat will rear up and charge. Captain thinks it's great, but Frank avoids him as much as possible. Both he and the Catahoula (Frank) are great with other domestic critters. Captain is fascinated with cattle. He has a grandparent from Germany that evidently had some herding heritage.

Frank is good with mellow cats, but avoids the obnoxious ones. Pretty much my opinion as well... I like the dog natured cats. The remaining 80% ; not a huge fan.

I have four shepherds, and one old cat. All the shepherds grew up with the cat, so they interact pretty well.... except my deaf shepherd is afraid of her. If Blackout jumps on the bed to get in my lap (like right now!) Magnum boogies.

Four Shepherds... Nice herd.

Captain is I believe my 7th Shepherd. I got a Shepherd Collie mix when I was in highschool and have had nothing but Shepherds until Frank rehomed himself here.

Ha, floating teeth. We had a black Belgian Shepard[ not really sure, rescued from an Indian Rez] and one picture of him we have is just floating white teeth.

As Dart is preparing for her Rainbow Bridge journey, Toga has been hanging out with her. Toga really has a soft spot for the cats, especially Dart.

Gotta love the animal/human bond. I'm sitting here with my cat Dart, the tabby, sister is Cuda. My two a-body super stockers. She is on her way to the rainbow bridge, been hanging with her since Christmas Eve. 16 1/2 years old.

Not dogs but .......
I've got 2 just like yours! Bella is the old girl. She's going to be 19 in the spring (a rescue I didn't think had the strength to survive almost 2 decades ago!) and ******* I mean Astro the 3 y/o typical black cat brought home by my son from a feral colony. I feel for your situation with Dart. We don't want to jinx anything but we are starting to wonder how much time our sweet old girl has left. She still makes it to the box all the time, eats like a horse and totally beats up on Astro when he gets aggressive with her. Tough old broad, broke both bones clean in her lower left leg a few years ago, vet wanted to take the leg. Glad we told her to try and let it heal, today you'd never know she had any problem. Has Dart started exhibiting different behaviors that lead you to believe she is ready? Wife and I are hoping when it's Bella's turn she just goes to sleep. Best wishes to you and your furry companions!

It’s funny that you mention about your black cat. There must be a a-hole gene that is part of being a black cat. Our first black cat was Hawkeye. We got him from the pound when he was the size of a chipmunk. He would grow to be a massive cat, not fat as such, just big and tall. And he was a big homo. He used to bug our old girl cats so much that ultimately we had to segregate him and his boyfriend Jimmy in their own area. But in the summer when let outside his a-hole ways would resume. He ultimately got a blood clot near his spine and was sent off with much tears at age 17.
This last summer we rescued/sheltered 17 cats for five weeks during fire evacuation. One was a little black dude that bonded with me, so we kept him to add to our three existing rescue cats. Stanley. As he grows the a-hole gene is becoming dominant to such an extent that he has to be separated from the others, and we send Jimmy with him to keep him company although Stanley isn’t a homo and Jimmy seems to have lost interest in men.
Anyway… we’ve had many, many cats over the decades. None have been as big of jerks as these two black male cats. Both are totally sweet to people, just jerks to female cats.
What’s bizarre is one of our females, Gary, used to beat the living **** out of Hawkeye. Literally there would be black hair floating in the wind. One time she beat him so thoroughly that she collapsed in the driveway and we thought that she was dead. She would try to break through a window to get at him if she saw him outside. So I guess there was some justice for him bothering our old girl. Yet now Stanley bullies Gary and she just takes it. Go figure.

I've read your posts recounting your trials and tribulations during the wild fires as you saved the day for so many of God's creatures. You and your wife are very brave and caring people. It's comforting to know such character lives on in these "me first" times.
Thank you sir!
