Donny's 1969 Satellite

I had my guy working on this car this morning, the paint I put on the bottom in 06 was put over some remnants of POR15, which I've never done a full media blast on this car! But, that's changing, I thought he'd be able to finish it today, but, some of that POR15 and epoxy primer, and paint proved to be pretty stout.

Ok, got some news on this car! Over the past 2 weeks I've worked on this car 4 days - blasting it. I admit, this car has never been media blasted, and this is what I do! I know, incredulous! But, what I'm going to say here is to be filed in 'Lessons Learned' for myself, and, hopefully some of you out there!

First of all, this has been a rolling test-bed per se over the past several years, too many if I actually count them up, but, thank goodness I can blame the US Army for keeping me too busy to do anything much on it (and my other cars), and, being self-employed I do your stuff before I do my stuff! But, as I look at my calender, I have to move stuff around, and, I'm done moving my stuff around to be dealt with later. So, I imposed a stubborn plug up my yahzoo and dealt with my car first; before I do the 67 Fairlane and 70 'Cuda (both are waiting).

Here's my situation. The floors on this car were so-so, probably not ready to be swapped, but, the frankenstein work I did on them welding in patch panels here and there over the years, and that qtr installation job...Oh My! The welds and overall quality are NOT up to my current standards. And, back when I welded them on/in, I was SO proud and took tons of pics etc. Then, put the entire bottom in some not-so good (too thick) Epoxy Primer, then 2K Primer (don't ask me why), then a custom near T7 mix with a bit of metallic, that is a really cool color! But, all this new primer and paint was put on a not 100% eradicated POR-15 job that I lathered on to 'store' the car outside for a year when I was over in Iraq. Well, as I said, when I was doing this painting, my equipment was not set up, and I had no facility to take my project to, let alone anyone willing to do the work I do on these cars today. So, me and my Dad scraped off the POR-15 as much and as far as we could, but, there still was chips/peeling here and there in the corners. Sure, the bottom no one will see, right? I will, as I have a lift and will be underneath it and it's that Stubborness to do the job right, the first time. Now that I've been set-up to do jobs right the fist time since 2008, how I have neglected to do right to my own stuff is in a sermon somewhere.

But, now, the entire car is blasted clean, and, all my errors and other areas are bare to see -- whereas I can (and will) fix them here and now, like the lower A Pillar area where they all rot out, etc. I'll be taking tons of pics tomorrow, then, it will go in Epoxy Primer (much better stuff than before), and the repairs will commence, and the messed up former repairs will be dressed up as best as possible, not going to re-invent the wheel too much on this car, I have the 'Cuda and Fairlane to get hot on, not to mention the 93 Ram truck to assemble.

Warning, I will be showing you work that is NOT commensurate with what I currently do, so, keep this in mind when viewing, but, I will let you see it all in the ugly glory etc.

donny,we all do things in the past due to haste or whatever. The important thing now is that you are going to go back and fix it right instead of just letting it be.

Scary aye? I know, not what I'd do today.

This is really bad, embarrassing it is! I'm going to dress this area up over the next few days and post improved visuals, remember, when this was done, I was on my back, on the floor, while the car was on jackstands!

Hey don't feel bad man...I've been putting in some hard time lately on my Coronet i've had since high school and I can honestly say there has been plenty of things that i've found on the car that I did back then that I just sit back and shake my head at now. Amazing how our skills and level of professionalisim progresses with a bit of time and experience. You're man enough to identify it and post it, that takes a lot. Looks like you created a bit of extra work for yourself from back in the day, but i'm sure you'll make it right. Good to see the Satty getting some love.

I used the last bit of my Epoxy Primer today, had about 1/4 gal of black, and half qt white, in they went, and got a dark gray! Need about 1.5 qt more to finish it up. I swear, blasting media gets in EVERYPLACE, and, the rockers are fantastic at holding onto a few lbs of it! What's the thread name of your Coronet, you got one here right? I'll step on over and take a look! Yeah, the Satellite is getting some love indeed!

hey donny, always enjoy looking at the work you do.Don't feel too bad on what you did yrs ago.Heck, when i got my RR it had the hole in the floor so i pop-rivited in a flat sheet of thin metal, dash pads were faded so out came the spray can of gloss black. But looking at your latest pics has cleared up one thing i was worried about and that was the main floor pan.when i put my right half in i noticed the gap between the inner rocker and the bend of the new pan.I saw in one of your pics that there is a space in there so mine must be right also.THANKS!!!!

That gap, there should be a gap, at least the other side has one! Not sure how I'll button this mess up, but, I will!

No thread on the Coronet Donny...Just a major overhaul of some of the mechanicals going on right now. If there was, pretty sure I would name it "didn't see that coming" lol.
Dumping a lot more/time money than expected. But, I guess we all know how that goes....Situation Normal.

Ohhhhh...Rudy's. Hands down my favorite BBQ sauce. I have one bottle left from what a co-worker picked up for me while he was in Austin. So, I'll be bugging you soon. I'll have to see what I have left in the AMD pile for bartering

I ran down and got some more epoxy primer, tried to match my custom color from yesterday; the gray. But, the first batch today I got it a bit off, oh well, the roof is two diff shades...haha.

donny, that is a great photo of the under body.

donny looking goooooooood keep up the good work I no how hard it is having a buisness and trying to work on our own ,:headbang:

wowo, mixing those two colors coulda been a big mistake. ever see Operation Petticoat?

Thanks ya'll, just trying to do my best on it, and make some progress too! I scored a deal with paintshop101.com that all future jobs they send me are on a barter basis; meaning I do the work, credit is built-up and they then buy me 4 qtrs, 2 end pieces, 2 trunk drop offs, trunk drainage trim, door mouldings (drip) for both my cars, etc. I got enough hourly work to pay the bills with these 2 restoration projects that I can afford to do it this way-so, new sheet metal is getting closer!

you gotta love the barter system :headbang:

The love continues! In keeping with my stated objective to NOT push my stuff out of the way any longer, this car is getting measurable attention, and progress! The underneath is about 'done' for now, and won't need attention for a while underneath until it goes for qtrs, and then paint, and undercoating.

Notice the leaf spring bracket here, how much better it looks, welded in properly and all vs. the hack job I did before with angle iron! Also, had some smattering of GTX stuff in the paint mix today; the rear deck lid attaching hardware/strut supports got some love too, as did a BB timing chain cover! The front lower grille assembly is for the Satellite.
