Guys, Edlebrock 1406 carb was regaskited/cleaned and installed less than a year ago. Fired up and fine tuned, it ran very well. Car sits for almost a year not cranked. Now gas floods out the top on both sides of front two barrels. Okay, I'm thinking floats stuck open. I pull the carb, turn it upside down and shake all the gas out, hoping to unstick needle and seat. Carb turned right side up with air pressure put on fuel inlet and has air flow, as would fuel flowing into an empty bowl. Turn carb upside down, which should close fuel inlet needle and seat, and it does. Cannot move any air through inlet, which proves to me float needles are seating. Reinstalled carb and still having fuel flow out the top. What else should I look for in taking the carb apart. I just can't believe the float levels are off. that much from only sitting a while. thanks

What is your fuel pressure? I don't know how that could change over the winter but stranger things have been known to happen. Anything more than 5# can cause the issue you describe. Double check your float level and drop.

if running an electric fuel pump may need a regulator as pumps can over pressure and unseat the float needle.

I don't think it did any good turning it upside down except to put whatever junk was sitting in the bottom of the bowls all over inside the carb and maybe changing the float levels too. just take the top off and see what is going on.

Remove both floats and check for any leaks that may allow them to hold fuel.

Is the tapered check valve still under the front accelerator pump squirters?

Not sure if its electric or mechanical pump and no idea what pressure is. The car was not drivable when we cleaned/regasketed the carb and got it running. It ran fine and I would say less than a gallon of fuel was ran thur it at that time. It has an inline filter on it . So there was no gunk/crud in there except what was left over when the bowls dried out from sitting. Dave I will look for the tapered valve when I pull the top off, so not sure yes or left out yet. The gas getting pumped in is starting to smell rank. I should be able to go in to it in the morning. It really acts like a stuck open float valve. Is there any other way for fuel to get into the bowl other than coming through both float needle valves?

Take 'em out and shake 'em. You may have one that's filling with fuel and submerging.
Verify the seats are clean and tight. Reset dry float levels. Reassemble and install.

I force a Q-tip into the seat, and rotate it to sweep any particle of dirt out of it. Definitely shake the floats to feel/listen if there is any fuel in them. Carters/Edelbrocks are pretty simple carbs, and quite reliable, but don't like much more than 5 psi. of fuel pressure.

Leaking float, can be just one. Float binding on side wall. Excessive fuel pressure, over 10 psi. Sticking n/seat.
It may only be one side of the carb that has the problem, but the carb has a transfer passage at the rear that allows fuel transfer.

Okay Race Fans, you nailed it, it was a leaky brass float. It was about half full of fuel when I pulled the top off. Got it replaced and she runs as designed, great. thanks all......
