Engine Serial Number to Car Identification

I am wondering how the serial number on the pad by the pan rail is identified to which car it goes to. I understand it matches the Vin on the car that it is in but how do you tell what car it was from if you have a engine and no car? The engines I have start out with (Example 9A271445). This determines Year and Plant, last 6 of Serial but there is no Indication of what model of car it was in. Or did they only build specific models at each plant identification?

I have a 55 Caddy, there is no VIN, just the engine stamped serial number, and it's 9 numbers, if that is pertinent.

Each plant built certain makes and model either the entire year (Lynch Road was primarily B bodies so Belvedere and Coronet based cars. Jefferson was Chryslers and Imperials. Belvidere plant was Dodge and Plymouth C bodies, LA built A, B and E bodies depending on the year, etc)

So, you have to know what plant built what cars during what time frame of the model year. After that, VINS were assigned by make and sorted alphabetically. So for 69 Lynch Road on a given SPD, the Belvedere, R Vins, cars will have the lowest VINs than the Coronet, W VINs. After that, you have to have a data base of VINs that can bracket the unknown VIN, such as yours.

So for 69 Lynch Road, 271445 falls in the range of R based Belvedere VINs. If it's a 440, it came from a GTX. After that, we can only guess on the model. It could be from a Belvedere, Satellite, or Road Runner.

The A is the plant car was built. Don't think they'd put the same sequence number on two cars at the same plant.

I also have a Serial# B171582, There is no year stamped in it. It is a 426 Hemi so assuming it came out of a Cuda/ Challenger

B is Hamtramck.

You can determine the year by looking at the pad at the front of the engine. Look for E, F or G.

Given the info in front of us, it could be from a 69 Charger.
