I am looking at putting together an exhaust for my sons car....I am thinking dakota manifolds....for good flow and maintenance free....do yall think the stock Y pipe or an after market cat less Y pipe would fit? Or would it be a custom operation or just go for duals? I think a good 2.5 in single system would sound good and keep the noise down a little.

What car is it and what motor does it have?

I had a 360 in a '79 Magnum that at the time needed to pass N.Y. States emissions tests. The car was not of age where I could skip it. So, off the OE exhaust manifolds, I did a dual 2-1/4 H piped system that also had to have cat's. Here I opted for a set of high flow cats. (I don't remember the brand) and i ran it through to Thrush turbo mufflers.

The smog laddened 360 is pretty down on power so the smallish pipe size works well and remains quite. Going to a 2-1/2 pipe size will just increase the sound level. Power may go up but I really do not see a big rise in it.

The resulting sound level was very quite but did serve some notice when the long pedal was pushed to the floor.

Bolt on engine parts and a split duration cam can wake the car/engine pretty good. Keep the cam small and the split wide due to restrictive exhaust manifolds. Comp cams has a line of cams designed with exhaust manifolds in use. The split is wide. The extended exhaust duration is designed to empty the cylinders more so the incoming charge is cleaner with less exhaust has that robs power.

Use a MSD or equal system and a earlier OE distributor with vacuum advance for a good mileage increase and a better running engine.

I'd like to learn some more about Comp's stock mani cams. My exhaust guy actually advised me away from headers and duals because of how low my car sits. I give him an A for integrity on that. He could've sold me the headers, twice as much ss pipe, and another Flowmaster muff along with some job security fixing my collectors every other week when I tear em up on a driveway or speedbump. We went with a single 3" instead. The offset gas tank is an obstacle too. I've read where guys say they moved the tank over to make room, although nobody's ever addressed how they got the filler neck to center-up behind the lic plate. The single exhaust works well but its pretty loud....I must be getting old. Sounds great at WOT tho.

So you went with stock Manifolds?? Or later model?? Can you get any pics of the y pipe you used?? Id still love pics of your dist install as well.....just the wiring really.....if its easier I can give you my cell# and you could text them to me...
Thanks!

I would advise as well against typical street headers for small blocks. Ethier Doug's, tti's or Hooker Super Comps @ 1-3/4 pipe size if headers are needed/desired.

With the exhaust manifolds, any can change should use a big split in the pattern. I wanted to use the Comp Cam line of cams for use with the exhaust manifolds, but never got there. They look good.

The manifolds are the stock 1976 cast iron pieces. I've looked into a lot of headers and it seems that the ones that fit well are stupid-expensive. Shortys might work if ya can find a set, fitment being the bugaboo there again. I'd like to try some better flowing later model manifolds if anybody has a suggestion as to what will fit and flow well enough to be worth the tetnus shot I'll most likely need after un-assing rusty iron exhaust bits. I'll try to take a picture or two of my guy's handiwork, he custom built/bent the whole system from headpipes on back. Hard to get a picture under there, but I may have the car on a lift before long to install some angle shims at the rear springs. Unfortunately the fella who let's me use his lift is waaay across town (about 2 gallons worth, each way) so I try to do as much as possible at each excursion.
