How do you guys heat your oversized garages?

Heat? That's funny...heat...! A patio heater that I bought at the end of the last super-cold snap does the trick for the area I need it. It's not going to make the shop 70-degree toasty, but it makes the immediate work area environment nice.

Summer cooling? A 48" floor fan and open doors.

A 2x4 wall stud stick at Lowes locally is over $20.00. For ONE.

And a 4x8 sheet of 3/4" plywood, finished on one side, was $106.95. I seem to remember paying about $28.00 for that same sheet back in January of 2020.

I won't buy them now and feel used later when the price comes back down. They can stick their 2x4's where the sun doesn't shine. I'm just getting settled in my new house and have put some jobs on hold. It's not the money, It's the thought of being used that drives me crazy. What cost me 50 dollars to do last year is now right at 200. That's just not good business sense. I'll sit this dance out.

My neighbor has a old Chevy work truck with a lumber rack on it... Yesterday he had about 30 12" 2x6's on the rack.. I was joking with him there was more money on the rack than under the rack...

There's so many ways one could build a garage and few that would fit everyone's needs. It's like anything else think about what your going to use it for then design it around that.

I built a 2 story that's 32W x 34D x 13H with a 24×24' attachment because it fits my needs and the landscape the best. I wanted a very minimal heating and cooling bill so I tried to keep the size within reason by having 3 areas, 2 are storage and one kept comfy.

Having 3 dirt bikes, a quad, a 3wheeler, a UTV, bicycles, etc, etc made going 2 stories a no brainer especially considering the huge bolder out back that serves as a ramp lol.

The 24×24 attachment is primarily for parking cars but doubles as a paint booth with radiant heat in the floor when needed.

I'm sure glad I finished my shop last year, couldn't imagine what the costs would be with the current lumber prices.

I got my building permit in 2017 and had a contractor lined up for the concrete and framing, but as it seems to happen wasn't able to get me started before winter set in, so it was spring 2018 before they got started...still that 6 months cost me $2000 in additional lumber costs, mostly in the cost of plywood.

If you know of a local sawmill.. popular is still cheap. Mine is framed in popular, better wood than pine and just as easy to work with but is a bit more unpredictable when buying it green. No plywood needed when using metal siding either, just house wrap.

This garage is more efficient than my house, R19 walls, R25 ceiling, partially buried in the bank, the attachment as a wind block, the upstairs as an additional barrier and R17 garage doors... Super easy to heat and cool.
