Hey guys,
Ive got my 69 Coronet almost torn down to a shell. While Ive worked on cars my whole life and Im pretty decent with a wrench, this is my first complete teardown. I can honestly say that I know next to nothing about bodywork. With that said, I am willing to try and learn.....gotta start somewhere. Plus, this car will be a driver. Its not # matching and I dont foresee winning any trophies. It just needs some new metal and paint.
Im pretty close to being able to DA sand it. Here is where the noob questions come in.
1) Should I do piecemeal or try to get the whole car done. I ask this cuz if I do the whole car, its going to take awhile, and Ive heard not to leave bare metal exposed for any length of time.
So would it be better to strip, say a fender, do whatever needs to be done to it (hammering out dings, cutting out rust, welding in new metal, etc), bondo and primer and then move onto another part of car? Or strip the whole car, then do all bodywork, then all bondo, then all primer?
2) I am only planning on using bondo in the sections where I cannot straighten out the metal. For instance, I have a small crease in right fender that I just dont see how I can get out whether its hammer on or off. Is a small amount of bondo ok in those circumstances or does it usually just come back to bite you by bubbling later on down the road? Any specific brand of bondo (actually bondo is a brand isnt it?) I think u know what I mean....haha. is there a difference in quality? please recomend.
3) Now this question is almost embarassing.... So ive got my panel all stripped, bondoed, block sanded, and it feels nice and smooth, now do I primer it? or do I need to treat the remaining bare metal somehow? If I can prime it, what type of primer? Can I just use that spray can automotive primer they sell at home depot?
4) Once primed, can I leave the panel or car that way for a considerable amount of time (inside garage)? Say...6 months to a year while I save up for paint job?
5) What am I forgetting?
I know....lots of noob questions. But this is the stuff I need to know before I start stripping.
I appreciate any and all advice whether it be a comment, a link, a write up, or anything to help me get started.
Thnx!
