Fiberglass hood springs

Just wanted to put this out there...I had a tough time finding any usable info on a set of springs for my bolt-on 6-barrel style hood (glasstek)...searches never gave any conclusive specs or sizes, so with one of the stock heavy springs in hand I went to some of the local hardware stores, and I finally found these... They work great. They require very, very minimal effort to close the hood, yet they hold it open perfectly... $6.50 each at the nearest Orchard Supply Hardware store...they can be found online too...info's on the label

Wifey's happy, I spent less than $15 plus she got her adjustable duster handle back..!

Yes thank you this is very good information I will look for the springs do you like your glass tech hood does it appear correct and does it have the right scoop height?

Got mine from a hardware store too. IIRC, bought 3 sets with the smallest ones not being quite up to the task but the next ones were it. Took the untried ones back. Thing is, my car has been apart for so long now, I can't remember where I put them.

Thanks beanhead! Just for info: did you weigh your hood before install, and if you did how much lighter than steel? And are you using a latch, or pins?

No I didn't weigh the hood by itself, but I did weigh the car before and after and it was roughly a 25lb difference. I put it on close to the place with the scale, so the amount of gas used wasn't enough to factor in. I used hood pins only and chucked the factory latch stuff in a drawer somewhere, even though the hood has mounting provisions for it.

Removed springs put 75lbs struts in there place for my fiberglass hood. Still working on brackets for the struts. Doing the same thing for truck lid.

I got the same springs for my hood and have not had a problem with them so far. They installed easily.

Thanks for your reply! Much appreciated. Do they do a good job holding the hood up on its own? Ie: wind won’t blow it down?
Also what brand of hood do you have?

Sorry bud, somehow I just saw this....probably too late to help but mine's a '68 Satellite. The springs make it very easy to open the hood and they keep it there, and it hasn't suffered from any bow-tosis so I'd say the springs are still working good!

I've been using mine for a while also with no issues. '68 Coronet AAR Fiberglas hood.

My fiberglass Shaker hood has some weight to it. I never weighed it. However, it is probably over half of a factory hood for sure. I have Harwood part # 210's (gold) on my car with a medium tension. Harwood also has a light tension part #200 (silver) for lighter hoods and a high tension that is part # 215 (black) for heavier hoods.
