Finally time to pull the trigger . . . starting on the New (much anticipated) SHOP - Build

Last day of the month . . . and the results of my "goal" . . . How'd it go ? ? ?

Finally, the last day of the month has arrived and the results of my "goal" . . .

This is a mock up of the first truss for the silo . . . turned out pretty much like designed . . .

sm_shop1567.jpg

Now - to get to the front wall and completion - got the left door covered with siding and ready to be installed.

sm_shop1568.jpg

Now the door has the siding painted and the window re-installed . . . along with the right side door getting framed
and ready for the siding to be installed . . .

sm_shop1569.jpg

Next - got the last garage door installed - so the entire downstairs is now closed up . . .

sm_shop1570.jpg

Next - I pulled down 1 of the plywood panels on the side of the building . . . and found a large number of these
"stink bugs" camped out under the plywood ( and this was a very small amount ) there was TONS of them

sm_shop1571.jpg

So I started down the wall and figured that the top panels needed to be removed and the stink bugs removed
as quickly as possible so the don't get all over the shop . . .

sm_shop1572.jpg

Removing more of the plywood sheathing . . . a goal that I've been waiting for - for a long time !

sm_shop1573.jpg

Removed all of the top panels and all the stink bugs too . . . and the shop is getting connected . . .

sm_shop1574.jpg

Pulling the panels down as I can . . . and turning these 2 shops into 1 big shop ! ! ! I'm excited ! ! !

sm_shop1575.jpg

So the results of goal . . .

Note: this was all done yesterday but the website only allows 10 pics posted.

My take on this - even thought the (2) doors on the front still need some design work ( and how they will open )
And the (2) windows above the doors in the rear of the shop still need to be ordered and installed . . .

Will take this as a WIN . . .

and meeting the goal to have the shop enclosed by the end of the month !!

More Later . . .

Little re-cap on this project . . . a view back in time . . .

Looking back on this . . . it was quite interesting . . .

April 2021 . . . starting the build . . .

1727826689400.png

September 2021 . . . concrete pad is poured . . . ( 6 months to figure out how to get the concrete pad done )

1727826759693.png

October 2021 . . . wall framing of the left building is done . . . starting on the roof . . .

1727826923655.png

November 2021 . . . roof trusses and purlins are all in place . . .

1727827052325.png

December 2021 . . . start on the metal roofing . . . ( * first time I've ever done this * )

1727827176912.png

December 2021 . . . metal roof in installed . . .

1727827223664.png

December 2021 . . . siding on this part of the shop is completed . . . ( 3 months to get the building built )

1727827321767.png

AND - the start of a New Year . . . and "wrapping up" ( literally - with tarps ) the first part of this build . . .

January 1st 2022 . . . the temporary plywood and tarps get installed ( that I'm currently taking down . . . )

( 9 months from the first dig - to the completed building . . . )

1727827386500.png

January 2022 . . . got another building in the way that needs to get moved . . . the red shop to the right . . .

1727827470889.png

March 2022 . . . start building the foundation for where the building needs to get moved . . .

1727827575093.png

Pretty cool to look back at this . . . and remember putting that plywood up on New Years Day . . . and now the
plywood is being taken down to combine the (2) shops and make it into a single shop . . .

Come a long way on this build . . . THANKS to all of you and your comments to help keep me moving forward on
this project . . . It has been one hell of an adventure, learning new stuff and trying to figure out how to fix all of
the things that were botched up along the way - on top of trying to figure out HOW to get some of these things
by myself . . .

Life gets in the way, (2) granddaughters . . . loss of a job . . . covid . . . and all the other wonderful things that
life has a habit of throwing at us when we least expect it ( and least NEED it ) . . .

Seeing the final results - the shop being combined together is so rewarding . . . still got a bunch of stuff left to do,
and I sure hope that you all continue to follow me along during this endeavor . . .

Still got some pretty interesting "ideas" for the silo . . . that still needs to be designed, built, and installed ! !

Thanks again to ALL of you . . .

More Later . . .

Been watching along and becoming more and more amazed, as I see the amount of work, being done.
Thanks for taking us along!

Connecting the (2) shops together . . . is still the goal . . . and progressing . . .

Work continues . . .

The removal of the plywood sheathing from the side of the first part of the barn in progress . . .

sm_shop1576.jpg

And finally - there are no longer (2) shops as they are now all part of the shop . . . Got myself 1 shop now ! ! !

sm_shop1577.jpg

The design for the top of the silo is as follows - it contains full rafters, and half rafters . . . this should do the trick . . .

sm_shop1578.jpg

Got all of the full rafters cut and drilled . . . ready for wooden dowel pegs to help hold them together . . .

sm_shop1579.jpg

Working on the connection of the full rafters to the sections that will be holding them . . .

sm_shop1580.jpg

Got the bottoms all set - they are also dowelled to the center section . . . need to still do the same with the
top section . . . and "maybe" move a couple of them around to level things out a bit . . .

The "plan" is . . . this can be taken apart and hauled upstairs - and then re-assembled . . .

sm_shop1581.jpg

But for that to happen . . . I need the flooring on the top of the silo on place so that I can stand on it . . .

Work has begun on that part of the build . . . as you can see . . .

sm_shop1582.jpg

thought that the 20' 4 x 4 metal beam was going to need to be cut off . . . but it looks like I'll be adding an
additional 8 or so inches to the height to get it where it needs to be . . .

sm_shop1583.jpg

Now the center beam also becomes a integral part of the beam support for the silo floor . . .

sm_shop1584.jpg

Got all of the trusses in place . . . and got them painted to help protect the wood . . .

sm_shop1585.jpg

Things are still moving along, and the temps have finally started to fall a bit so that they are not so sweltering . . .
Boy was this a bad Summer with the heat and humidity . . .

Need to get this flooring down, and figure out a way to get from the current platform/staircase to the top level of
the silo . . . still got to figure out how to do that . . .

More Later . . .

Still working on getting a bunch of thing accomplished and wrapping up the exterior shell . . .

It's getting there . . . slowly but surely . . .

Getting some work done on the platform for the silo . . . so that the top walls and roof can be completed . . .
This is - by far - the biggest part of the build that still needs to be done . . .

sm_shop1586.jpg

Getting the decking in place . . . the gaps are big to allow the light to get through . . . it's planned that way . . .

sm_shop1587.jpg

Very hard to figure out HOW to get a good picture of this from the ground . . .

sm_shop1588.jpg

Then . . . while sitting on the decking up here and trying to figure out "how" to get the steps up here . . .
it finally came to me . . . just needed to change the direction of the steps . . . planning it out . . .

sm_shop1589.jpg

Oh, got a pretty sick tree . . . and it's with in falling on my house, the shop, and the carport . . . not good.
So I'm working on "limbing" this thing ( in my spare time ) so that it can come down . . . root ball and all ! !

sm_shop1590.jpg

Got the ladder to the top figured out, designed, and being built . . .

sm_shop1591.jpg

In the process of building this ladder, the expanded metal got stacked up and looked pretty cool . . .
Needed to get a picture of this and share it with everyone . . . too cool . . .

sm_shop1592.jpg

Once again - trying to get a picture of this area in the silo is not very easy - but the ladder in place . . .

sm_shop1593.jpg

One last piece of wall on the front of the shop ( actually it will be a door ) . . . and finally got it built . . .

sm_shop1595.jpg

And . . . of course . . . it HAD to get painted . . . and we now have a full front face of the shop ! ! !

sm_shop1597.jpg

First time that this has been seen - and it looks GREAT . . . More work left to do - and working on it !

More Later . . .

Still plugging along on the building . . . and making progress . . .

Sure is nice to have nicer temperatures, but the lack of daylight really sucks.

Finally got this part of the stairs completed and installed . . .

sm_shop1598.jpg

The next part of the puzzle is the windows above the doors on the back of the building . . .

sm_shop1599.jpg

Ordered the glass for the windows and got them built and delivered . . .

sm_shop1600.jpg

And finally . . . got them installed and the upstairs of the shop is now sealed up . . .

sm_shop1602.jpg

In addition to the pictures above . . . got up on roof of the shop and got the last section
of the ridge vent completed with the enclosures getting installed . . .

Working on getting the radiant barrier installed in the silo and the rest of the shop . . .

sm_shop1603.jpg

And another piece of the shop gets the radiant barrier also installed . . . got the back wall left to do still too . . .

sm_shop1604.jpg

Working on getting the inside of the shop all put together and get ready to have the insulation installed.

More Later . . .

Windows for the silo have arrived . . . Time to get started on finishing it up ! ! !

Finally - the windows for the silo are now sitting in my shop . . . ready to install . . .

First step of this process . . . is build the wall area so that the windows can be installed . . .
Here's the first step - the first part of the octagon wall going up . . . started on this in the morning . . .

sm_shop1605.jpg

Doesn't look like much for now . . . but it's onl6y the start of the project . . .

sm_shop1606.jpg

Lunchtime - and all but two of the walls are installed . . . moving along quite nicely ( for a change ) . . .

sm_shop1607.jpg

After all of the 8 wall were built - the next step was the roof . . . it was "assembled" in the shop . . .
NOW - time to take it apart and get it up on top of the silo . . . it was easier to do it this way . . .

sm_shop1608.jpg

Here's the first two sections of the silo roof - hauled up top - and put back together . . . went pretty well ! ! !

sm_shop1609.jpg

Once again . . . doesn't look like much . . . but it's the beginning of the final part of the silo ( and shop ) . . .

sm_shop1610.jpg

Next milestone . . . was getting 4 of the trusses in place and the roof supporting itself on the top of the silo . . .

sm_shop1611.jpg

Then - all 8 of them were re-built and in place on the top of the silo . . . it went faster than I expected . . .

sm_shop1612.jpg

From the ground - wish that I had got them painted . . . not real easy to see them in place up there . . .

sm_shop1613.jpg

Finally - that last part of the shop . . . the silo roof is starting to come together . . .

sm_shop1614.jpg

This part of the build actually went a lot faster than expected . . . did not ever expect to get this far today, and
was hoping to be able to post this tomorrow and have a majority of it in place . . . SURPRISE ! ! ! !

Next step - will be to get the 1/2 trusses in place up there . . . have them built - and had to do a slight mod on them,
but they're still off a bit on the fitment . . . figured they would just get "fitted" up there in place . . .

Sure hope that this decision is not one that will be regretted . . . ( sigh ) . . . will find out tomorrow . . .

More Later . . .

More time spent working on the roof of the silo and the lookout . . .

This has bee quite fun and the progress has been pretty fast and rewarding for a change . . .

After this part of the roof was up there - the work on getting it painted began . . . should have done it on the ground !

sm_shop1615.jpg

Then - with rain expected later in the week - it got covered with plastic for protection. . .

sm_shop1616.jpg

During the week - the painting was worked on with the plastic cover left in place . . . that was the easiest . . .

sm_shop1617.jpg

As stated - part of the roof - now the 1/2 rafters need to be installed - the one in the middle is one of them . . .

sm_shop1618.jpg

As a perspective - on this side are only the main rafters . . . you can see how sparse they are placed . . .

sm_shop1619.jpg

On this side, between each of the full trusses - is the 1/2 truss - and it double up on the rafters . . .

sm_shop1620.jpg

All of the 1/2 trusses have been installed - and everything has been painted . . . now for the purlins . . .

sm_shop1621.jpg

Got the bottom ones - and the top ones installed in this picture - need to get 2 more rows installed and this thing
will be ready for the metal roofing . . .

sm_shop1622.jpg

Got all of the rows of purlins in place . . . and now this thing is ready for metal roofing - need my measurement

Kinda bad news . . . it'll be a 1-2 week delay on the metal roofing as they are doing a lot of projects to help
support our western brothers that got hit really bad with Hurricane Helene . . . my heart goes out to them . . .

sm_shop1623.jpg

The incredible view of laying on the floor in the lookout - and looking up at this roof structure . . .

Really love this view and picture . . .

sm_shop1624.jpg

As one can see from the pictures - the "holes" in the roof structure got a bit smaller as the pieces were added to
give it strength and give support for the metal roofing . . . this caused a bit of "interesting fun" as the holes are
( lets say ) not quite big enough for a man of my size to "easily" fit through them to allow me to get the needed
work done to get these things installed . . . and THEN put the plastic back up to protect the building . . .

Needless to say - I'm one pretty sore puppy tonight after all the squeezing into those little holes . . . sheeesh !

But . . . the job got done and the metal roofing is new ready to get installed . ..

More Later . . .

Most impressive Larry. I really like how you throw yourself at these projects.

Don't tell anyone . . . but I worked high this entire weekend . . . sheesh . . . .

Now what are you thinking . . .

But first . . . let's attend to some important business . . . Found a website that does online auctions . . .
And this is one of my first "wins" of the auctions . . . (3) Arbor Presses and the table ( + misc stuff too )
pretty cool addition to the "not quite finished yet" shop . . .

sm_shop1625.jpg

Now - back to working high . . . had to rent the man-lift again to work on the silo . . . and took a shot at this
tree that is coming down . . . while the equipment was available . . .

So the "high" was a result of being 30' in the air most of the weekend . . .

sm_shop1626.jpg

Tring to figure out the plan always takes the most amount of time . . . getting the radiant barrier to size . . .
How to cut the panels . . . turns out the triangle cut out of the top of the panel were just about the exact size
needed to fill in the missing parts on the bottom of the roof section . . . got lucky there . . .

sm_shop1627.jpg

Slowly but surely - got the first two panels done . . . but it's hard to take a picture of in from ground level . . .

sm_shop1628.jpg

As the sun was setting - the silo roof is now sporting ALL of the drip rails and Radiant Barriers . . . still got a TON
of work that still needs to get accomplished with rain in the forecast for tomorrow . . . UGH ! ! !

sm_shop1629.jpg

The silo is now sporting it's tin foil hat . . . and waiting for the rest of the metal to be installed . . .

sm_shop1630.jpg

Got the tree pretty well pruned down . . . that tree will need to cone down . . . soon . . .

sm_shop1631.jpg

Got started at O'just after dark 30 - with the temp 40 degrees - to fight with the metal install . . .
From this picture, the (2) panels to the left are not done yet - they were the two hardest ones to figure out
HOW they were going to get accomplished and not get hurt . . .

sm_shop1632.jpg

The roof section to the right of the one not completed - was not easy . . . and was tackled from the roof of the
shop - with a whole lot of skepticism and worries . . . could NOT get the lift to get up to the location . . .

sm_shop1633.jpg

The last section was actually done on the lift, after it was repositioned, and went up fairly easy - which the
previous one was the exact opposite - but the roof is now completed ( except the very center section ) which
is still in the thinking and design phase of what to do . . .

sm_shop1634.jpg

The short daylight hours, the colder temps, and fighting with the lift made for quite the interesting weekend,
but the results are something that I'm very happy with . . .

The windows for the lookout are in the shop, but they were intentionally not installed until the roof was completed
to make sure the something "stupid" did not happen and get one of them broken . . .

More Later . . .

Soo, you went up 30’ for the clean fresh air?!!! Great work, getting close.
