Firearm and Ammo of choice

Police would be "civilian professional", as opposed to military forces.
Yeah, that’s what I was thinking but you won’t see them with a .22.

Don’t get me wrong, a 12 ga is a devastating weapon. So much so that Europeans consider it barbaric for police work, and I believe they are banned by the Geneva Convention.
But they do have some disadvantages:
Pumps are the most reliable but take some training to be used properly. I’ve personally witnessed police officers trying to re-qualify that couldn’t handle the things.
Semi autos can be unreliable, singles and doubles have low capacity.
Buckshot and slugs can over penetrate.
They are all slow to reload.

.22 can definitely be effective but I don’t trust the ammo to be reliable, and semi auto .22 pistols tend to be unreliable. I’ve done some action type matches and the most problems I’ve seen are .22 pistols

.22 rimfire is dirty. I've done more mods on .22 pistols than Mopars to keep them running. The right ammo is like the right fuel and can make the gun run. Keep 'em clean!

I love rimfire. With that being said I would never rely on a semi auto .22 and I own 7 two of them are .22 mag.
If I only could have one weapon for protection, I’m thinking a Taurus Judge .45 colt .410 with Hornady critical defense
