Firearm and Ammo of choice

Police would be "civilian professional", as opposed to military forces.
Yeah, that’s what I was thinking but you won’t see them with a .22.

Don’t get me wrong, a 12 ga is a devastating weapon. So much so that Europeans consider it barbaric for police work, and I believe they are banned by the Geneva Convention.
But they do have some disadvantages:
Pumps are the most reliable but take some training to be used properly. I’ve personally witnessed police officers trying to re-qualify that couldn’t handle the things.
Semi autos can be unreliable, singles and doubles have low capacity.
Buckshot and slugs can over penetrate.
They are all slow to reload.

.22 can definitely be effective but I don’t trust the ammo to be reliable, and semi auto .22 pistols tend to be unreliable. I’ve done some action type matches and the most problems I’ve seen are .22 pistols

.22 rimfire is dirty. I've done more mods on .22 pistols than Mopars to keep them running. The right ammo is like the right fuel and can make the gun run. Keep 'em clean!

I love rimfire. With that being said I would never rely on a semi auto .22 and I own 7 two of them are .22 mag.
If I only could have one weapon for protection, I’m thinking a Taurus Judge .45 colt .410 with Hornady critical defense

So I went the .40 route in the early 90's, ported Compact HK, and later on added a KelTec 2000 .40 as a truck gun after the 11/15 Paris Concert attack because of my line of work. Now that .40 has somewhat fallen out of favor, I like where I am, as when it ever goes sideways, I'm not a viable source for the ever popular 9mm.
My next addition will be likely be a 5.7x28 pistol and whatever silencers I can acquire, as I am not getting any younger, and it will get the job done and 22+1 has some advantages.

I'm a revolver guy as far as useful guns. My collection includes S&W stainless revolvers of all calipers, favorite probably is my .44 nickel plated. I also have a fetish for late 1800 to early 1900 double barrel shot guns, got about 60 so far but there is a gun show this weekend so that number might rise!!

The best defense with an auto-loading.22 pistol would be to throw it at the intended target.

For me it’s the Mossberg short barrel 12 ga with 00 buck and my S/W Texas Ranger 4” 357. Both are consistent, easy to use and accurate. I also have slugs for the shotgun but those are more for occasional fun and not necessarily home defense.

My opinion on home defense is really simple and if an intruder has come to visit then I am going to make sure that this will be their last visit to anyone. Using any weapon in your home invites damage and you should know where everything is in your home.

Practice and know your weapons and your capabilities under extreme conditions and you should be able to get the situation resolved in quick order. Know your weapons so they are as familiar as either hand and practice not using the sights and shooting with either hand. This leads to a quicker response with less fumbles that can cause more problems.

Just my personal opinion and experience and that’s all.

A Mercenary. And it makes perfect sense. Effective and efficient.
Yes it makes sense that in that case they’re offensive weapons, not defensive.
And the intended opponent isn’t likely to be expecting trouble.
